it’s genuinely amazing that we have vaccines that can fully prevent some diseases. but we don’t yet have that vaccine for covid. full stop. we are in the midst of a mass covid disabling event right now and part of it is due to spread between vaccinated people

I have long covid now and haven’t been able to do prolonged aerobic activity in 7 months. I got my 4th or 5th vaccine a month before the infection that pushed me into long covid status, and that infection was preventable. but people can’t prevent covid alone, it’s a group project

this pattern comes up with climate, covid, fascism etc: to prevent large scale harm before it occurs, you have to break with the pattern that is allowing the harm & try disruptive shit that offends people who benefit from the status quo
bluesky was not conceived or designed as an explicitly anti-fascist project, so we've seen that it is often incumbent on users to repel fascists by any method they can, some of which will feel like "too much" to people invested in the status quo, but this is actually just what it takes to stay safe
blueskyism is many things to many people, but in relation to X, it is the idea that a community can have boundaries and refuse to consent to abuse and harm. demonizing the behaviors used to repel abuse, rather than the abuse itself, is what helps abuse flourish and that's what nate tin is doing here

and i think this is where we have to be pretty careful about the theory of change many are operating on, because isolated posting on the internet etc is not actually going to help us rebuild atrophied relationship skills and organize new societies from the ashes here, quite the opposite tbh
another thing to avoid is the idea that because working with other people is hard and annoying, we should give up on it. we can push through and re-build atrophied relational and organizing skills, but we have to be committed to our own growth too
avoid grassroots organizations led by people with big egos, and look for grassroots organizations that clearly demonstrate strong coalition behavior. also, honing our own relational (communication, conflict resolution, deescalation) skills makes us assets to organizations rather than liabilities
i think the pattern of feeling outraged about what's irrevocably breaking right now does keep us from moving rapidly to organize what's next. imo, the single most important thing you can do is join a grassroots organization you believe in and work to make it more just, equitable, and organized
even with the US being a kind of hellzone, there are 30-60% of us who genuinely want to live in a just society and solve climate change etc. the breakdown of the federal govt means we have an opportunity to reboot with a different system. we have the skills & resources, but we lack a plan
as someone who has worked in nonprofit advocacy for a very long time, i have to say that its kinda wild how much potential we have to force social change but do not use because nonprofits generally operate as isolated, resource starved individuals rather than collectively synergized systems
another way to do this (besides raising money through foregone EV sales) might be if 75% of passionate US bicycle/multimodal transportation advocates decided to work closely together across disciplines and organizations, and invested collective time and resources on transforming ONE city
a focused nonprofit policy planning and advocacy organization with a budget of $40 million could significantly impact a mid-size american city in the near term, both through writing and advocating for policy, and through designing and building out the plan as a private development partner
if americans understood that we can have nice things if we work together and join and support organizations, we could really transform our communities, and yeah that is sometimes gonna mean sacrificing individual consumerism for the collective
how can we plan an american city into bikeability? idk but i do know that if 2000 people in any city decided to donate $20,000 each to a transportation advocacy organization instead of purchasing a $20,000 electric car, that would raise $40 million, which would fund 40 professionals or so for 10 yrs
the implication here is that it’s going to be very hard for major US cities to do the kind of bicycle & multimodal transformation we all want without centrally planning it

I test rode some Kona e bikes recently and was overwhelmed by how jarring their rigid aluminum frames were at speed. I’ve been riding steel with larger tires for so long I forgot a bike could be like that (also Kona’s pedal assist didn’t feel worth the weight and expense to me, not enough power)
