it’s genuinely amazing that we have vaccines that can fully prevent some diseases. but we don’t yet have that vaccine for covid. full stop. we are in the midst of a mass covid disabling event right now and part of it is due to spread between vaccinated people

I have long covid now and haven’t been able to do prolonged aerobic activity in 7 months. I got my 4th or 5th vaccine a month before the infection that pushed me into long covid status, and that infection was preventable. but people can’t prevent covid alone, it’s a group project

Judge: I got a call at 2:36 a.m. because the govt chose this time on a holiday weekend to execute this plan. I have been up since then. I haven't been able to reach anyone from govt until this morning at 9:30 a.m. So absent this intervention, all children would already have been sent to Guatemala!

RE: safety The problem with indoor training is that it reduces the number of people cycling on the roads, making them less safe for those who continue to do so. So whilst it may reduce exposure on an individual basis, at a collective level it is problematic.

We have people on leave who signed publicly that have been with FEMA for 1, 5, 10, and 15(!!!) years. These are DEDICATED experts. They wrote and signed this declaration because they care deeply for the safety of the public and they are extremely concerned we are headed towards another Katrina.

Ok now I really want to ride a real one, and see how it feels I was gonna hypothesize their steel frames absorbed the jolt of cobblestones but I’m prepared to be wrong

I test rode some Kona e bikes recently and was overwhelmed by how jarring their rigid aluminum frames were at speed. I’ve been riding steel with larger tires for so long I forgot a bike could be like that (also Kona’s pedal assist didn’t feel worth the weight and expense to me, not enough power)

controversial opinion but the main reason beach cruiser bikes are smooth and relaxing is not just the geometry, but the steel frame and wide tires

While the test route didn’t transform The Hague’s cycling culture, it offered key insights. 1) Context matters: Ambitious infrastructure works best on main roads, not hidden side streets. 2) Scale matters: A single route isn’t enough; what’s needed is a connected grid with real network improvements.

The Hague’s Prins Hendrikstraat is a typical Dutch shopping street, where bicycles outnumber cars by a factor of ten. But five decades ago, it was the site of one of the country’s first and worst instances of ‘bikelash’; culminating in shop owners digging up a cycle path in the middle of the night.🧵
