I think it would definitely look better seated on my couch than up close on a PC screen -- which has me thinking I should play it on console instead of steam deck. Although I have my visual concerns, overall I'm just happy it's getting a proper re-release with QOL features! More good than bad!
Sean Buckley ๐น (@seaniccus.com) reply parent
The classic mode doesn't have all the new features, though. I really wish there was a hybrid option.

What did you think about the sprites? Since the first trailer I thought everything about the game looked fantastic except the sprites seemed kind of muddled, like a blur filter was put over them. I'm not fond of it. It's not as bad as tactics ogre's sprite filter, but it's still my one reservation

Yeah, the modern map is very manageable for a newbie, but even though everyone says it's not worth doing I still wish they had a 1.0 legacy experience available so I could go back and try again. I don't have clear memories of it but what I do remember of it I liked.
Sean Buckley ๐น (@seaniccus.com) reply parent
I remember playing it at launch but made the mistake of starting in Gridiania, which was a unmanageable maze. If I chose the other starting area I probably would have played for longer.

If I remember right you don't even need to hit yourself in the face. Queuing of the actions for your first three characters, then hitting cancel, then doing it again, counts for experience as if you had done the action -- letting you stack dozens of fake exp gain actions per battle.

The hoops you have to jump through to pretend this makes sense are so silly So Durham, who was trying to find evidence that Trump's opponent did a crime, FOUND IT, but instead of putting it in his report, hid it in a bag meant to be destroyed in hopes it would be found 5 years later? Ok.

In the four years I've been at IGN I've watched its staff shrink and shrink, all while those who remain are asked to do more and more. I see colleagues skip lunch, stay late day after day, and burn out. IGN staff are passionate and love their work. But we can't keep letting that be exploited.

Playing a Japanese game through machine translation, even one I've played many times before, was a bit of a weird experience though Even through an awkward language barrier, it's still shines as an amazing game all the way through. SNES is definitely the best way bsky.app/profile/sean...

I wound up playing through the Super Famicom version in Japanese this year while using it to test something. I only have planned to play for a few minutes, but it was so good I played through the entire game. I hadn't played it on the SNES in over 20 years, probably. Amazing.
