Berry was the best part of the show, tbh. But while I liked the show, it was the actors lifting occasionally solid bits up on their shoulders that made it good. The bits were better than most sitcom slop, but not often exceptional.

Worth pointing out that the German unrestricted submarine warfare campaign of WWII was more legitimate than just blowing up some defenseless boat in international waters. This is not a defense of Nazi Germany, but an indication of how effortlessly evil we are.

I do love that the NRA is treated either as a complete warlord mess, or a unified whole under Chiang. The Central Army was pretty good! But the further you get from Nanjing, the more likely they were just horrible warlord forces.

So the question is not "can Bardia be held?" It absolutely can not. It's not going to. But if the Italians can put up a spirited resistance, then they can wear down the Commonwealth, and maybe prevent a historical beating like Beda Fomm.
Fuss (@semperfitrex.bsky.social) reply parent
The Italians are unlikely to crumble quite as hard as they did in real life, but it's not gonna be an easy scenario for them. They need to hold out for a week against concerted British assaults. If they hold out, they can give their army time to recover at Tobruk. If not, Compass rolls on.
Fuss (@semperfitrex.bsky.social) reply parent
The Commonwealth, on the other hand, has artillery, air, and naval support. Not nearly what people who are used to studying battles in Italy or France would be used to, but by the standards of British forces in early 1941, quite a lot.
Fuss (@semperfitrex.bsky.social) reply parent
The support for each side is lopsided. The Italians have no naval, air, or artillery support available outside of their units, as they are holding a position that is unlikely to be reinforced without holding for longer than the scenario will last. All they have is the ability to defend in depth.
Fuss (@semperfitrex.bsky.social) reply parent
So what we're going to see is three Commonwealth formations, with significant tank support, having to break through a defended position held by a force about half again their own size, but which has dramatic limitations in mobility and quality.
Fuss (@semperfitrex.bsky.social) reply parent
The Italian infantry forces are green, the lowest quality the game has, as their fragile morale and insufficient equipment to deal with the British attack precludes treating them as trained. But the Cavalry reserve, though small, is actually trained, due to their comparably higher quality.
Fuss (@semperfitrex.bsky.social) reply parent
The Italians have elements of three corps, with the 62nd, 63rd, and 64th Infantry Divisions, and the 1st CCNN and 2nd Blackshirt Divisions, along with a hodgepodge "Cavalry" reserve made up of Frontier Guard, Bersaglieri, and a force of tankettes with a small amount of real tanks backing them.
Fuss (@semperfitrex.bsky.social)
Okay, so the game has taken a bit more form. The Commonwealth forces include the 2nd Australian Division, 7th Armoured Division, and the 32nd Tank Brigade. All forces are trained quality (average), and all of them are in good strength, as the Italians didn't harm them much at Sidi Barrani.

It is important to both fight for electoral wins, but also understand that electoral wins will almost certainly not suffice for victory. Trump will not be able to stop every win, but he will have the power to stop enough to stop any reform. But each overturned win radicalizes our side! It's good!

"Minimal fights" The Union commanders would disagree with this. The Union commanders would also have loved if Johnston had put his army at risk taking offensive action in northern Georgia, where it could be destroyed. Trying to force Sherman to make mistakes was the move. It almost worked.

Hood got the AoT to fight at Peach Tree Creek. Fighting for the sake of fighting doesn't turn out great. But picking your battles, like Kennesaw Mountain and New Hope Church?
Fuss (@semperfitrex.bsky.social) reply parent
The fact that his aggressive actions at Bull Run were vital to winning the battle, and the fact that he lost command of the ANV leading an attack at Seven Pines? Johnston was willing to be aggressive when he had sufficient manpower or no better choice. He just rarely did.
Fuss (@semperfitrex.bsky.social) reply parent
Nope. Very, very few wars are foregone conclusions, and no way with forces that had the parity of those in the American Civil War is a foregone conclusion. War is a messy business, and choices matter a lot.

You can't force calls for party unity anymore. Sorry, but that's not in the cards. You can't make a case for party unity in pure opposition to something, when the group in power has slow-rolled, or flat out stopped, all efforts to actually oppose what you're uniting against.

Longstreet going west for one campaign nearly destroyed Rosecrans, and would have allowed real offensive action by the Confederates.
Fuss (@semperfitrex.bsky.social) reply parent
Johnston understood that only Confederate armies in the field could win the war. Sieges were a mug's game for the Confederates, who would inevitably end up outgunned, outmanned, and undersupplied, with little hope of relief. Losing the guns, and especially the men, in Pemberton's army was awful.
Fuss (@semperfitrex.bsky.social)
One underrated aspect of the Vicksburg campaign is how badly Jefferson Davis misunderstood the assignment, and how not up for the moment John Pemberton was. The moment it was proven that Vicksburg couldn't keep the Mississippi completely closed, the Confederates should have begun evacuation.

Fuss (@semperfitrex.bsky.social) reply parent
Rosecrans, Hooker, Howard, and others lose out because they had one bad moment, often not even one that was their fault, and became a punchline. But these were good officers! I don't know how we can look at New Hope Church or Spotsylvania and call them one offs, but not those of other leaders.

It's gone too far the other way, tbh. Lee wasn't an abysmal general, and this was a war that had them. Now people are so desperate to find Union generals they can call geniuses that they latch onto the biggest names, declare their undisputed genius, and walk away.

Fuss (@semperfitrex.bsky.social) reply parent
Yup. But strategy takes a backseat to tactics in most popular Civil War history. Except, for some weird reason, with Sherman, who gets unlimited tactical fuckups that put his army in a bad spot because he made one strategic decision that worked out.
