Need something Of The Time to read? Can't do much better than Barbara Yelin's Irmina and Caplan and Weinersmith's Open Borders. In one, a fiery progressive slides into Nazi complicity thru a series of banal choices, in the other we reevaluate our immigration policy both morally and scientifically.

It's not so much that I'm not enjoying it or don't think it's good but more that it's not at all what I want to read. But now I'm 2/3 through I've got to push thru.

I don't understand the brain that sees AI video and thinks, "Oh yeah. That's the stuff. This is beautiful. Love it." It's like those people who see 60fps upscales of 12 or 24fps animation and think, "Wow this looks better."

Hundreds of hours toward earning an award just abolished in one more failure of the administration's thirst to dismantle things without understanding them. -_- Service for the sake of service is obviously a virtue, but when a reward for service is offered and then withheld, that is a lack of virtue

Another minor (comparatively) victim of DOGE's mishandling of federal services that nonetheless kind of sucks a lot is the Presidential Service Award. My kids have worked for years volunteering hours of time toward the award. We recently went to submit their hours and found the program suspended.

I haven't played Earthborn Rangers, but from comparison reviews, I think they'd feel like pretty different games. I've definitely had some minor frustrations with Vantage (mostly that locational directions for quests can be extremely vague), but I've loved every game of it I've played so a far.

Vantage remains nuts and one of my new favorite boardgames. We crash landed, as per usual, and while Michelle fought and defeated a kraken and feasted on one of its tentacles AND THEN solved a murder mystery, the first thing I did was build a winery and explore the joys of viticulture.

It really is amazing that there are so many options that people will never encounter. Kim was the most important thing to me in the game. The game wasn't about the case or communism or getting Cuno on a better track or the encroaching Pale. It was about Kim. I wrote this at the time:

Apart from all the other things that make Disco Elysium a cream-of-the-crop game experience (things like a wildly unique stats system, an absurd sense of humour, and a daring narrative panache), for me the shining crystal of its greatness is in something you have the opportunity to do. You can, if you wish, earn the friendship and respect of a detective sent from another precinct to help you solve your case. Look. You are a disaster of a cop, a disaster of a human, and this guy is stuck with you. He knows you have a reputation for closing impossible cases, but he finds you raving and haunted—a detective with no memory, no badge, and no gun. And throughout the game, you have the option to win him over, to become his friend. And honestly, some of those moments where we grew closer, where we shared in simple human camaraderie? Those moments were as exciting to me as when I first saw that bit from Planet Earth 2 where the baby iguana is racing across the sands to escape 30–50 feral snakes. I was sitting there, laughing and clapping my hands like an idiot because of how much I had invested in this character and his approval. You don’t have to make friends with Lt. Kim Kitsuragi. You don’t have to win his admiration. You don’t have to stand up for him against the onslaught of bigotry he faces daily. But holy cats I wanted to—not because it’s necessary to finish the game—but because me and Kim? We’re friends, partners, a part of each other’s lives. What a thing to experience in the scope of a videogame. —Seth T. Hahne

150 pages into The Magic Mountain and I'm not sure whether I like it or not. There are, certainly, bright spots (esp the meditations on time and illness), but much of the rest appears critique of the intellectual movements native to Germany at the turn of the 19th century, which are alien to me.

For a book that normally looks like this (pic1), Ballad For Sophie gets pretty out there for a couple pages in the late '60s (pics 2&3 not very SFW)

Oh that's interesting. I'm trying to think of the last places I've been that doesn't have a changing table. And I suppose they're all hole-in-the-wall restaurants where having a bathroom at all feels like kind of an afterthought. šŸ˜…

I just know that at the time, it felt like a real win that moms were beginning to not be shamed for meeting the needs of their babies, without being tapped on the shoulder and advised to cover up or feed elsewhere - bc the last thing Michelle or our kids needed in those moments was to get hassled.

And so I hadn't thought about it until yesterday when the mom next to me started feeding her baby in Starbucks, but that struck me as rare so maybe I missed a regressive cultural shift. Or maybe I'm just not in a place where the babies hang out.

Was there a generational backlash against public breastfeeding? 15 years ago when our littlest were little, it wasn't uncommon to see babies eating out, some with covers, some without. It felt like the culture was at a good place where it was gauche to object to feeding in public.

We got my 8yo Megaquarium for his birthday bc he and his brother are real oceanheads, but here's the secret: I'm loving it. I just finished the fourth campaign aquarium (the one that introduces cold-water creatures) and man it's great. Really disappointed to find that Switch only has one of the DLC

I'm taking a week off to take care of some deadlines, but here's the latest 10 of my daily graphic novel rec series. Only 10 more to go until I've recommended all the graphic novels that can be recommended.

I like that pretty early on the construction hurdle becomes negligible through recipes, making it so the non-crafters can have a seamless game and the crafters can dick around making a heat-seeking tank with spinning mandible blades harvested from endbosses. Good worlds for both kinds of players.

If you're a platformer and you add PUSH ā¬‡ļø WHILE JUMPING for a downward attack, then I immediately stop thinking you're rad. If you add a camera mechanic that you need to use and you are not a camera game, then I immediately stop thinking you're rad. Worse if it's snap enemy while it attacks you.

My mom told me yesterday that I've half convinced her to read Moby-Dick BUT that I'm the only one she's ever heard describe it as essentially A Very Funny Book, so she worries that it's just my sense of humor.

If it wasn't for her, that book would never have been made physical and would have merely remained digital vapor. She is a hero. Also, this was the campaign that convinced me I probably wouldn't do any more big money campaigns again in the future.

I still go on Facebook once a day to a) check my memories so I can remember the good and bad I've been through and done, and b) post things that future me will appreciate being reminded of. Like a year ago, the most anxiety-inducing campaign succeeded bc my mom donated $1500 at the bell.

I started Mann's The Magic Mountain and I have a LOT of book left (527 more pages), but I'm laughing at how CONSTANTLY it refers to Hans as "Hans Castorp." Not Hans. Not Castorp. Hans Castorp. I can't figure out what kind of book I'm reading, but I'm guessing rather arch comedy of some sort.

I'm like, Yeah, I dunno what to tell you. Maybe Mori got her Great Game-era fashion researched muffed, but you're wrong about the location. Like, she's pretty specific that Smith travels down south along the Aral and then east past the Caspian and finally arriving in Ankara. So that's a Kaz start.

My favorite of the nitpicky-randos genre of internet interaction is when people comment on my ancient review for A Bride's Story on goodreads to correct me from saying that the story begins in Kazakhstan. "The outfits are clearly Tajik!"
