Trying to figure out if the 8yo's Halloween costume request is at all feasible š

Need something Of The Time to read? Can't do much better than Barbara Yelin's Irmina and Caplan and Weinersmith's Open Borders. In one, a fiery progressive slides into Nazi complicity thru a series of banal choices, in the other we reevaluate our immigration policy both morally and scientifically.

Little hand drawn animation and banjo theme I made. It's been a year since my brother's passing, it's hard to type stuff so l'll just let the video speak for itself. Thank you for watching. Keep going, enjoy the sandwiches.

My 8yo got to see marine animals for his birthday and could not physically contain his joy in the experience.

Currently Anders Nilsen's Tongues is in the lead for my comic of the year. I guess we'll see what happens when the final vol of Land Of The Lustrous lands in November; I could see that sweeping me well off my feet.

I started up The Magic Mountain this morning thinking I only had 12 hrs left. Immediately deflated to discover it was actually 15 hrs. It's not so much that I'm not enjoying it or don't think it's good but more that it's not at all what I want to read. But now I'm 2/3 through I've got to push thru.

Shipbreaker is such a great game and while I enjoyed the story the first time I played it, not including a skip button on the cutscene monologues kind of sucks. I'm on my fifth playthrough and being forced to listen to Lou earnestly monologue through each "Hey Rook" is just grating.

I don't understand the brain that sees AI video and thinks, "Oh yeah. That's the stuff. This is beautiful. Love it." It's like those people who see 60fps upscales of 12 or 24fps animation and think, "Wow this looks better."
Seth T. Hahne (@sethhahne.bsky.social)
People on my FB are sharing an AI video where Kirk is talking about his death and introducing you to some of his friends who were also *martyred* for their faith. Friends like St Paul, St Andrew, and St Peter. Gruesome stuff. Wouldn't wish that on anyone.

Hundreds of hours toward earning an award just abolished in one more failure of the administration's thirst to dismantle things without understanding them. -_- Service for the sake of service is obviously a virtue, but when a reward for service is offered and then withheld, that is a lack of virtue
Seth T. Hahne (@sethhahne.bsky.social)
Another minor (comparatively) victim of DOGE's mishandling of federal services that nonetheless kind of sucks a lot is the Presidential Service Award. My kids have worked for years volunteering hours of time toward the award. We recently went to submit their hours and found the program suspended.

I haven't played Earthborn Rangers, but from comparison reviews, I think they'd feel like pretty different games. I've definitely had some minor frustrations with Vantage (mostly that locational directions for quests can be extremely vague), but I've loved every game of it I've played so a far.
Seth T. Hahne (@sethhahne.bsky.social)
Vantage remains nuts and one of my new favorite boardgames. We crash landed, as per usual, and while Michelle fought and defeated a kraken and feasted on one of its tentacles AND THEN solved a murder mystery, the first thing I did was build a winery and explore the joys of viticulture.

She pretty much immediately put herself in that position -- not wanting to face incredible violence, fighting for her life against monsters larger than buildings, and knowing that 100s of 1000s will die if she doesn't -- and said, "That's... that's a lot to put on your shoulders."

This is somewhat how One Hundred Years Of Solitude hit me. Being ignorant of the Colombian history GarcĆa MĆ”rquez is interacting with and commenting on, so much of what makes the book valuable was simply lost on me. I enjoyed the story, but was always haunted by knowing that I wouldn't Get It.

150 pages into The Magic Mountain and I'm not sure whether I like it or not. There are, certainly, bright spots (esp the meditations on time and illness), but much of the rest appears critique of the intellectual movements native to Germany at the turn of the 19th century, which are alien to me.

It wasn't 'til my forties that I could finally be proud of who I was, that I could honestly say I was doing my best to be a Good Person. Some people get there faster, but I untangled myself slowly and some never untangle themselves at all. In any case, always aiming toward evolution.

It wasn't 'til the end of my 20s that I took a look at who I was, realized that I didn't measure up to who I thought a person should be, saw I needed A LOT more humility, and started working toward change. Four years into that process, I met Michelle and she helped accelerate that process.

Not entirely averted, I'm sad to say. I spent my 20s not being a great guy. This was pre-incels and social media so I didn't have that nonsense feeding into me (I can't imagine!), but I did grown into an arrogant turd.

I just know that at the time, it felt like a real win that moms were beginning to not be shamed for meeting the needs of their babies, without being tapped on the shoulder and advised to cover up or feed elsewhere - bc the last thing Michelle or our kids needed in those moments was to get hassled.
Seth T. Hahne (@sethhahne.bsky.social) reply parent
And so I hadn't thought about it until yesterday when the mom next to me started feeding her baby in Starbucks, but that struck me as rare so maybe I missed a regressive cultural shift. Or maybe I'm just not in a place where the babies hang out.
Seth T. Hahne (@sethhahne.bsky.social)
Was there a generational backlash against public breastfeeding? 15 years ago when our littlest were little, it wasn't uncommon to see babies eating out, some with covers, some without. It felt like the culture was at a good place where it was gauche to object to feeding in public.
