Made some progress on these ZBD epop 55c-RB ESLs this weekend! Ended up soldering jumpers straight to the board for now because my pogo pins were too large. Was able to get some basic text and symbol rendering working thanks to a ton of prior art by @dmitry.gr ❤️

www.popsci.com/science/arti... Initial reading says yes but it's negligible until you reach a certain scale or poorly plan your turbine layout.
Boatplugs (@shadylink.lol) reply parent
I think physics implies that the energy that was once moving the wind is now moving a turbine and won't be applied to whatever else it would have. I think it's a pretty negligible effect but that energy came from somewhere and had a destination before we captured it.
Boatplugs (@shadylink.lol) reply parent
But this is a tidal generator so I doubt it's even affecting currents in a significant way. Honestly no idea, but I'm a fan of harm reduction so lets get it.
Boatplugs (@shadylink.lol) reply parent
I'm certain there's at least something right? The earth is a system so however small the change is it will affect something in some way. Maybe a reduction in the speed of the currents causing a shift in the global ocean currents?
Boatplugs (@shadylink.lol) reply parent
My initial thought would be noise pollution but deep drilling literally already causes insane amounts of damage and not just from the noise alone either. Sooo yeah, I'll take the clean turbine please.

Helped a friend rework a batch of boards with broken MEMs microphones. Took some images of the silicon membranes... First two are from broken samples, last two are from intact microphones. Our best guess is the CM used shop air to blow off the boards and destroyed the microphones with over pressure.

Also another fun thought is if we had deatomizing teleportation tech that DID kill do you think there would still be people who would willingly use it? I think a lot of people would.
Boatplugs (@shadylink.lol) reply parent
Dunno! It's fun to think about, the reality is that we don't understand what makes consciousness so we're just playing games with logic and the idea that you could maybe theseus' ship yourself.
Boatplugs (@shadylink.lol) reply parent
Okay try this one: would it be more acceptable if we cryogenically froze you first, pausing all of your bodily functions. Then proceeded with the deatomization, reatomization and then thawing?
Boatplugs (@shadylink.lol) reply parent
I'd like to imagine the physical arrangement of your atoms acts as a tuning fork for your consciousness. If you deatomize and reatomize everything exactly as it was there shouldn't be any reason why your consciousness wouldn't just 'continue' just like waking up from a nap eh?
Boatplugs (@shadylink.lol) reply parent
Well, I am familiar with going to sleep and waking up. Sleeping on a long car-ride feels a lot like teleportation to me.
Boatplugs (@shadylink.lol) reply parent
We only assume that because we don't exactly have the technology to do star-trek levels of de-atomization nor do we have any evidence of what consciousness actually is. It's just as easy to assume that star-trek teleportation IRL would work like waking up from a nice nap.

Obviously brain activity isn't actually ceasing but to someone who is unconcious the end result is the same, the perception of concious thought is broken. If the requirement is that your 'brain and data' be intact then there should be no qualms with deatomizing and reatomizing yourself.
Boatplugs (@shadylink.lol) reply parent
