I am curious about the nuances of how the economic losses and gains were counted and accounted for, when it comes to miles traveled and by which type of vehicle (car vs bike). Happy to have a full recovery! Yet I hope that the bikers stay safe!
Sharena Rice, PhD (@sharenarice.bsky.social) reply parent
This makes sense: about a year ago, I was hit by a car while riding my bike in California. Some economic gains for society: -Needing to spend 3 days in the hospital -Several follow up medical appointments -Hiring a personal injury lawyer -The insurance settlement -Having the bike repaired

Sanmai is working to translate cutting-edge neuroscience into clinic-ready tools. While our device is investigational and not currently available for commercial use, our focus is rigorous trials, FDA approval, and making neurotherapies that are safe, effective, and accessible.

This is the cake Bill's daughter made for his 72nd birthday party, when Bill joked he was turning 27. I guess when life gives you lemons and life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get. Maybe it's not really lemonade, it's lemon chocolate cake.
Sharena Rice, PhD (@sharenarice.bsky.social) reply parent
Bill loved lemon chocolate cake. The first time he tried to order some from a cake store, they said they did not do lemon chocolate, as those flavors don't go together! Bill ordered it anyway. It was very good. So we had lemon chocolate cakes at his birthday parties!

Being a graduate student instructor would ideally not be the only way outside of grants for grad students to fund their work. Universities have multiple responsibilities besides teaching which they need personnel for. Hands-on experience can help both the trainee and their university.
Sharena Rice, PhD (@sharenarice.bsky.social) reply parent
Thus, if biomedical science trainees were working part-time in the university hospital for a year or two as medical technicians, that could potentially be a source of funds. For people in other sciences, perhaps they could cross-train in intellectual property and work part-time with tech transfer.
Sharena Rice, PhD (@sharenarice.bsky.social) reply parent
I find it amazing that a PhD can go for years working with EEG or MRI for neuro research, yet despite their works with the techniques, they are not considered qualified/certified as EEG or radiologic technicians. Yet the medical trades provide stability for 2-year associate's degree holders.
Sharena Rice, PhD (@sharenarice.bsky.social) reply parent
In the biomedical sciences, it could be if the scientists are normally cross-trained as medical technicians. If they are part of the university hospital healthcare system, they can provide an essential service, learn techniques, and gain a better sense of how to meet clinical needs as innovators.
