Anyway...Dems need to break out of the impulse to see 200 white people protesting against Covid restrictions as "the voice of the people which we must heed" while seeing 10X as many people protesting racist police violence as "a niche special interest group that's out of step with real Americans."

We need someone who knows where they are going and how to get there that we can lock in behind. We have very little in that department on our side, unfortunately.

Even if that was true, it’s still not leading anyone to do anything, y’know? We need people with plans and ideals and goals, a *direction and place to go*, and ways to encourage and allow *other people* to join and contribute with an actual place for them, and marching orders.

They tend not to be real shouty, but they for damn sure know they can’t just give up, roll over, or concede early.
As a Midwesterner, I really think more attention nationally should be given to Midwestern Dems. It’s a very different vibe that I think would play very well. Lots of very modulated insistence.

Discussion on this keeps reminding me of working in any public facing position. The enjoyable ones never bonded by hating on customers or whatever, but on the sense of banding together to overcome whatever nonsense was going on that day.
The policy that is needed will change based on location. The need--to LISTEN and RESPOND to people's real, material conditions--does not.
We have an extraordinary example of someone who is a unifier beyond expectation right now, and it's Zohran Mamdani. He does not throw anyone under the bus. The most important thing he did? Listen to what has people most upset. Propose policy that met those needs.

It’s wild that I can no longer tell if a person online using “lib” and “liberal” as an insult is right wing or left wing.
I’m here to meet and talk to people, not post up a billboard. And being social requires being able to shut up.
Some people approach social media with emphasis on “social” and some with emphasis on “media”, I suppose.
Very often my posts are much more the equivalent of wearing a graphic print t-shirt in public. Or excitedly making small talk with a stranger. Or meeting up with friends for a day on the town.
I will notice the flaws later, but, well. That’s how you grow and get better. I have high standards, especially for myself whom I can control mostly, but that’s not the same thing.
People have called me a perfectionist before, and I cannot for the life of me fathom why. I like the things I spend a lot of time doing n and work very hard at to be good-quality, but I’m also strongly of the opinion that “perfect” isn’t real, especially in the arts.
This especially matters for gifted/clever/adept kids. If school is generally easy, you HAVE to find them challenges, because kids who don’t learn to fail easily and gracefully will fail extravagantly and messily, and then avoid failing to the maximum extent of their cleverness. And that’s BAD.
Perfectionism and its avoidant cousins like workaholism are nasty components of a lot of fairly deep childhood trauma, and it’s a regular, tedious, hurtful thing that adults have to root out. But never installing it in a kid’s psyche is WAY better than removing that aftermarket piece of crap.
And hey parents: Remember: doing a thing badly is the start of learning to do it well. Your kid’s having problems with school? Don’t punish, find help that’s not you (because you are tired and will get frustrated because beginner’s mind is a hard state to get back into). Sports/art/music? PRACTICE.

Sherly getting translated to Sherlock by Viz is my Roman Empire. That one is a word nitpick maybe, but it’s not a difficult adaptation to make and the difference MATTERS.
Nitpicking the exact word choices of a translation isn’t really worth it. As a writer, I often pick words very intentionally, but a translation has to adapt it. Save the complaints for “that’s straight up not even what they said,” which happens plenty.
