I think due to the shape of the packaging, my first impression was that these were Oreo-flavored toothpaste. Which is kind of horrifying to think about.

Old-school, pre-EDH casual constructed. That's also my favorite format even if Commander is included, by the way. >_> Like, Commander is neat, but I hate that it's come to totally dominate casual Magic. As much as I love 100 card singleton, I miss 60-card 4-of's.

Short and frustrating! (Because it's informative about an exploit.) What really angers me is that big corporations would rather spend $1,000,000 bribing politicians than paying employees or their own dang energy costs! 🤬

The great thing about writing your own program is that it means you can identify tedious tasks and find ways to automate them. In related news, now I can specify how many iterations of an operation I want to have happen, then click one button, rather than having to do each iteration myself.

Just saw an ad for what I think was a perfume, and for whatever reason, the footage was mirrored, which made it much harder to read the labels on the product, especially since the guy advertising it kept moving it around. Like, why would you run an ad like that? Why wouldn't you unmirror it?!

So new studies showcase that the more you know how GenAi works, the less likely you are to use it! 😌 This reminds me of ai advocates who claim that those who refuse to use GenAi do so because they dont know how it works, yet it’s the opposite! The less you know the more you are likely to use GenAi

Honestly, this is why I don't play Arena. When I play Arena, I get impatient waiting for the faceless entity to make decisions. When I play with another person, I can see them thinking, and there's room for engagement. (Though sometimes I do feel the pressure of the round timer when at my LGS!)

In many ways, that's evidence for my main point, which is that culture is, generally speaking, far more impactful for shaping who someone is than their religion.
Sientir (@sientir.com) reply parent
Anyway, I'mma stop this set of rambles here. I do think there were a lot of political actors in the 70s and 80s that warped Christianity in America to gain political power through it (from what I recall reading), and that Fox News (et al) have continued to build on that, and Trump harnessed it.
Sientir (@sientir.com) reply parent
Or perhaps it's about preserving a sense of comfort, which requires feeling like you're in control. Like you won't be persecuted. (And my goodness, I could go on at length about the persecution complex I see in conservative Christianity!)
Sientir (@sientir.com) reply parent
And from where I'm looking, that doesn't seem to be about power so much as it's about a culture and the power of memes and the desire to preserve your culture's memes. (Which, I guess, is somewhat definitional for conservatives.) I do grant that some amount is about preserving power, though.
Sientir (@sientir.com) reply parent
Basically, I look at a lot of the broader rhetoric coming from the Republican party (or conservatives more broadly) that say they care about the Bible, but what they're saying flies in the face of what the Bible teaches. My only conclusion is that their values are cultural first and foremost.
Sientir (@sientir.com) reply parent
Or why do so many Christians (typically on the right politically) speak so harshly about immigrants when God so frequently states (especially in the Law of Moses) that He loves the foreigner? Anti-immigration sentiment, it is easy to argue from the Bible, is ungodly.
Sientir (@sientir.com) reply parent
But what I'm talking about is something else, albeit a related concept. The idea of a Christian nation, for example, flies in the face of Jesus telling Pilate that Jesus's kingdom is not of this world (John 18:36).
Sientir (@sientir.com) reply parent
Sure, power is a part of it, especially those who are manipulating a culture for their own advantage (for example, all the ways companies use marketing to try and change culture to create demand for their products, like how de Beers invented the concept of the diamond engagement ring).

I kinda ran out of space there.. Basically, I was stuck because things were ambiguous and I didn't have a clear sense of direction. Once I finally punched through that and tried something, I was able to begin figuring things out, but getting there was it's own kind of work that's easily discounted.
Sientir (@sientir.com)
I'm really glad I write a daily diary (which I share on my Patreon), because it forces me to process things, which can be quite helpful for understanding. Like, I felt like I wasn't as productive today as I would've liked, but then I realized I was having to figure out how to approach creativity.

Sientir (@sientir.com) reply parent
Anyway, this is just some stuff I've been thinking about, particularly as it relates to my religion of Christianity. I've seen so much of Christianity become horribly appropriated by cultural forces, and it grieves me so much. Jesus said that we'd be known as His disciples by our love for others.
Sientir (@sientir.com) reply parent
Abandoning or changing your understanding of what it means to be a good person may require you to admit that what you were is someone that you would now consider to be a bad person. That's really hard! It's also very scary, and cultural pressure pushes against doing that.
Sientir (@sientir.com) reply parent
This indoctrination sets the framework for our moral understand and what things we value. Abandoning, or even simply altering, those things can be identity-shattering, which makes it hard to do for most people. Often, this is because these things teach us what it means to be a "good person."
Sientir (@sientir.com) reply parent
Part of the reason this happens is that we're indoctrinated into our culture as children. This is unavoidable, and those who want to protect children from indoctrination just mean they don't want anyone else influencing their children's cultural development.
Sientir (@sientir.com) reply parent
Like, often religion is a part of culture, but it's terribly easy for the culture to use that religion to validate its values and morals, rather than using that religion to derive its values and morals. The difference between those two things is enormous.
Sientir (@sientir.com)
Something I've been reflecting on lately is that when it comes to values and morals, it seems to me that culture eats religion for lunch for the majority of people.

On the plus side, you can kind of allude to stuff existing without having to make it actually exist like you do with a game, and you don't have to do any QA, and balancing work is arguably able to be minimized. But still! It's a lot of additional overhead!
Sientir (@sientir.com)
The thing they don't tell you about writing a story set in a game-like world is that you also have to design a game to write it. XD I mean, it isn't a full game, necessarily, but you really do have to at least figure out the bones and flesh out the details to some degree.

It's interesting how much tension in Magic design comes from the word "may". Tournaments like it because it makes missed triggers easier. (You missed it? You just chose not to do it!) Digital doesn't like it because it adds another click that the user has to go through that's generally a "Yes."
