This is why the abolitionist movement that emerged in the 1830s was such an epochal moment in US history, because it was (for the most part) the first time that a significant number of white Americans came to think of Black Americans as just Americans, and not an alien presence in "our" country.
Seth Cotlar (@sethcotlar.bsky.social) reposted reply parent
TJ was not a dummy. He recognized that he was the spokesman for the idea that nations deserve the right of self-determination and that Black people in the US were, by his lights, forcibly denied that right. But he was unable to imagine a resolution to this problem apart from colonization.
Seth Cotlar (@sethcotlar.bsky.social) reposted reply parent
Historian Peter Onuf has argued (convincingly, IMO) that Jefferson regarded Black people in the US as part of an alien and hostile nation, as "enemies" to America which he took to be a country that belonged to white people. TJ was somewhat sympathetic to the plight of enslaved people...
Seth Cotlar (@sethcotlar.bsky.social) reposted reply parent
The primal scene of Schmittian illiberalism in US History is obviously slavery. The same guy who wrote the words "all men are created equal" also then wrote passages about how he suspected Black people were biologically inferior to white people, which then justified denying them basic rights.
Seth Cotlar (@sethcotlar.bsky.social) reposted reply parent
The charge of hypocrisy only works if the people you're charging with it believe in the ideal of human equality, the rule of law, human rights, etc. Denying someone else a right you yourself have is only hypocrisy if one believes that the person you're doing this to is equally human.
Seth Cotlar (@sethcotlar.bsky.social) reposted
If we lived in a world of small 'l' liberal politics, then this would obviously be a non-starter with self-described conservatives. But because we now live in a world where our "conservative" party has embraced the illiberalism of Schmittian "friend/enemy" politics, the US right will be fine w/ this
