Our comment on the DOE CWG report is done. It tips the scales at 439 pages, approx. 3x longer than the DOE report. This is related to Brandolini's law: The amount of energy needed to refute bullshit is an order of magnitude bigger than that needed to produce it. Example: refuting one sentence.

Thanks for this Craig. I still remember the moment I had to fill my taxes in the US as a PD fellow, and realising I was in the third lowest tax bracket (of 20 IIRC). We got by (thanks to my full-time working partner), and I’d do it again. But it wasn’t a sustainable situation, to say the least.

Sounds so familiar! I vividly remember my dad taking us to see an Air show in the pouring rain. We hiked over a hill, through a forest and meadow as “the airfield should be here somewhere”. Ended up on the opposing paramilitary training field, soaked. I found bullet casings. Great day for a 8 yo. 😂😅

Just made a visualization for myself about the unprecedented growth in solar that I thought I might share. You can see how from 1880 to 1950 all our electricity came from fossil and hydro. Then nuclear briefly grew with market share increasing with up to 1% per year in 1985. Now solar takes over.

There was this notion, that as things get warmer, corals will expand to higher latitudes. But that seems not to be the case. Corals are too slow, and warming is too fast. Something also to remember when we look at past extinction events. 🧪🌊⚒️

For hurricane nerds only: my annual roundup of which models did the best. The European and GFS models were the top track models in 2024, with the GFS making better four- and five-day forecasts. The official NHC forecast was tough to beat. yaleclimateconnections.org/2025/05/whic...

So…about AI’s energy use… “…to create a five-second video, a newer AI model uses ‘about 3.4 million joules, more than 700 times the energy required to generate a high-quality image’. That's the equivalent of running a microwave for over an hour.”
