Democrats will not gain votes by indulging in transphobia. Have a goddamn principle, stand up for trans folks, and people will respect it. It's the right thing to do and better politics.

It was only a couple months ago that we were told school funding had to be cut, and we have money for this? I don't really care how old the state and country are, I care about making sure my kids get the education they deserve

It's only an issue if you're a white supremacist.
SleepyLegs (@sleepylegs.bsky.social) reply parent
I was trying to explain to my kids yesterday that American protests (in general) are oddly respectful to their targets. I ended up using the example of the French farmers who dumped manure on the steps of their government as a counter-example. Probably has something to do with US policing

I tend to agree. I'm skeptical of the idea that journalists are required to have no opinions/not vote in order to cover news, but I do think posts like this are out of order. The Feds threatening a citizen and their employer for speech is a much bigger problem though.

Genuinely, I wonder if Musk believes simultaneously that DOGE made massive cuts and that the published budget analyses are accurate. Weird headspace for someone to be in, but it seems plausible to me that Musk believes his own hype but not Trump's.

I think about this problem a lot: how do we make it easier or more immediately rewarding to do something hard? It almost feels like a game design problem in some ways, and I think we need to find the right 'achievement' system.

Stop allowing it to be studied *and increase police funding.* The belief that more of the right kind of training, more cops, more body armor, more weapons or whatever will fix police culture is the other half of our cultural problem.

There are 258 elected Democrats in Congress. They have sufficient personnel to talk about two things while having a group dedicated to figuring out the best way to educate the public on the fact that these are not separate things; they are linked.

A global hegemon is not inevitable. At this stage, I feel like a retreat to regional hegemony is likely, with competition on the fringes. The US is torching its own international order, and there's no single country capable of stepping in.
SleepyLegs (@sleepylegs.bsky.social) reply parent
It'll start with removing their accomodations at school - they'll make some BS argument that autistic kids need camps/institutions/wards and that public school can't provide that, so they shouldn't be there anyway. Then they'll go after noncompliant parents for abuse

Depending on how mad people on TV are, the tariffs range from being high and non-negotiable to being on pause for 90 days while negotiations happen. I wish any part of that were glib, but I genuinely believe that nobody is really sure (including the people who have to enforce the tariffs).

Kidnapping. Capturing a person against their will without due process is called kidnapping. Transporting them to another country without due process is called human trafficking. A squalid extrajudicial prison for people found guilty of no crime is called a concentration camp.

SleepyLegs (@sleepylegs.bsky.social) reply parent
This is a logic that gets Dems in trouble. The idea that our representation is "good enough" or "as good as we can expect" Primaries should be contested. Well-represented districts will return their incumbents. Poorly represented may support a new face. That's what the primary is for.
SleepyLegs (@sleepylegs.bsky.social) reply parent
Ideally, sure, BUT when the SC ruled that states couldn't determine eligibility for the Presidency (via the 14th amendment), they ruled that Congress had to act to find Trump ineligible. There's no chance Trump is thinking about amendments. He's suggesting that nobody would stop him.
SleepyLegs (@sleepylegs.bsky.social) reply parent
What you're describing is social pressure in favor of some viewpoints in some places, which is completely normal. If I'm in a church, I'll refrain from talking about my personal atheism due to social pressure. My free speech is curtailed, sure, but I've yet to see panic over speech in church
SleepyLegs (@sleepylegs.bsky.social) reply parent
Okay, but none of those resulted in the state employing its coercive power to imprison, deport, and harm someone based solely on their speech, right? Free speech isn't under threat when people are calling you an asshole and not listening to your argument.

Congressman, nobody is making the argument you're presenting here right now. The issue is tariffs on Mexico and Canada. Is your district being helped by initiating trade wars on our neighbors, friends, and allies?
SleepyLegs (@sleepylegs.bsky.social) reply parent
I think that's a phenomenon among elite non-Trumpists and not the general population or Trump-supporters. I find it abhorrent that the media/politicians/folks who should know better treat justification of war against an ally as a joke.

Just came out of a meeting for my local school district. We're planning financially for next year, and we have to factor in that Title 1 funding may be toast. If my district is doing this, so is yours. Millions of kids are getting screwed over because Republicans are trying to crown a king.
