After last year, we weren’t sure what this trip would look like. It’s a year to the day from when Rob finished his last radiation course in St. Louis, right before his chemo started in Chicago. Both of us fundamentally changed as people, and after this trip we have changed again.
Rob and I got married almost 3 years ago, but we waited to do our honeymoon, and it was perfect. We got to see almost the entire South Island, and every bird on my bucket list (but the Kākāpō). OH WELL, guess we gotta come back!
I fed them “eel mince” and they went insane! They were rising all the way up from the water and touching my feet, which I diiiiid not expect
We will absolutely be back as soon as we can scrape the $$ together

The sad fact is so many of the best editors got sacked from their trad pubs in the big DH and Boom culls of this year - lucky for us now they are all freelance so we can hire the ones we had the best experiences with directly
Also, a thing to consider, what happens if you have stock after your rights revert? Pulping books is something you’ll have to pay for if you can’t pay for shipping and storing. Most folks I know went through pulping route.
One of my publishers fucked up the indesign part so bad that I had to have a 6 hour phone call with my editor on a road trip and ended up having to do it all myself anyway!
Can’t overstate how much I love working with Jordan. One of the funniest, sweetest, and most talented writers out there! He has also stepped up to flat when the deadlines are looming, and treats his collaborators AS collaborators. Also, turns things in on time!

This kākā just sat like a foot away from us and chatted for like 5 minutes?! AMAZING
I know the us has 1 billion problems and a bird ain’t one, but it’s been amazing to see how NZ is doing conservation. We could (and should) learn a lot from how ya’ll are doing it.
Saw a kākā with @artbrister.bsky.social and it let us watch it for about 15 minutes while it preened. Absolutely amazing bird.

I took so so many. We saw at least five every day we were there! It’s been my dream to see them for so long, they got me through some of the worst brain days. I was convinced the universe would send me a kea and it sent me the best one - BULBASAUR!
