I'm lucky. I've been anti-Mouse and anti-Potter for decades. I learned to give up Star Wars. I've come to terms with avoiding Marvel. I've found alternatives, lost them, found new ones again, and started writing my own. It took time to learn it all, but it's been very, very worth it.
Darius Baktash (@sol-cantus.bsky.social) reply parent
Disney can last a couple decades of they know the market still exists. Corporate giants only fall when we fully divest from them and create alternatives they can't quickly duplicate, buy out, or legally crush. You have to build that opposition up, and that doesn't happen via used DVDs and piracy.
Darius Baktash (@sol-cantus.bsky.social)
For all the folks talking about the "high seas" and making Disney pay without having to fully divest from the mouse, I get it. It's hard. These are franchises you love. But as with Rowling, if you still talk about it and your kids still want it, they know, and they'll hold out.

You can't make this up. Because the wiktionary article contains a picture that helps define the term used and is pulled automatically from a public website discussing the topic in entirely educational terms, the post is "sexually suggestive." The post on censorship, my cat, and how context matters.
Darius Baktash (@sol-cantus.bsky.social) reply parent
Encouraging self-harm should absolutely be censored, without question. The act of discussing the topic, however, should not. We cannot help those in need if they're afraid to speak and cannot find those who've survived and can give answers as to how.
Darius Baktash (@sol-cantus.bsky.social)
I've made one post that has been caught by the censor...talking about how easily censorship can be abused. But I do talk a lot about my experience with self-harm, suicidal ideation, and clinical trauma. That's meant to be educational, and it would be misconstrued as endorsement.

This administration and these political witch-hunts will never stop once we allow them to start. There's a reason the Scarlet Letter is one of the first books we properly analyze in grade school. Similarly, why "witch hunt" is the phrase that it is. It is an excuse the powerful use to terrorize.

My cat who is 100% a goofball and who plaintively whines for shrimp. Speaking of other phrases, "plaintively whines" is another one that can get you in trouble out of context. There's no reason for @moderation.bsky.app to be censoring that, but in bowing to fear, it'll do so.
Darius Baktash (@sol-cantus.bsky.social) reply parent
Without context, the statement could readily be seen as pornography by fascist censors. Cis-straight men taken to trial and sent for execution. "He was warm there, body stretched out, impossibly happy in repose. I wished I could lay next to him in equal calm, a fierce lion no more." It's my cat.

Darius Baktash (@sol-cantus.bsky.social) reply parent
Most jobs in the US don't pay $100,000, even arduous, expert labor. There is no reason to put this number up unless the goal is to have a nation of citizens who are enslaved to millionaires. Millionaires who already buy their way into the system anyway. Millionaires enslaved to billionaires.

Darius Baktash (@sol-cantus.bsky.social) reply parent
Science is about living with failure as you slowly tease out threads of truth that you may never see the whole picture of. It's about knowing when you're not smart or specialized enough in an area and working with others who are. It's about decades of investment for the cause of truth, not fame.

Darius Baktash (@sol-cantus.bsky.social) reply parent
Groundbreaking science that requires skill and training will leave the US. Science that could save you from future disease and put food on your table. It will never return, because of the way we treat these immigrants already, much less further abuse they have vocally planned on.

Darius Baktash (@sol-cantus.bsky.social)
$100,000 is an impossible ask. It's meant to take in only millionaires who do no real work themselves, and rely heavily on others for theirs. It's meant to stop immigration and it's going to kill you and your family. "Why can't I get my medicine?" Because there are no pharmacists.
