The City And The City by China Miéville which i have read at least three times. sort-of-dystopian blended with a bit of police procedural. fits your criteria think.

my wife and i saw this when it came out, really enjoyed it (light-entertainment of course), and noticed Julia Roberts' subsequent rise with a sort of We Saw Her In Flatliners vibe

oh yeah. in English of course. i've got a copy of The Trial in Czech (by way of a souvenir, i can't read a word), but found out after i'd bought it and got back to UK, that of course Prague was in Austro-Hungary in Kafka's day, and he spoke and wrote in German.
Simon Christopher Buck (@spacemannorbear.bsky.social)
with my nose held firmly, i'd have to agree with this
Simon Christopher Buck (@spacemannorbear.bsky.social) reply parent
i've tead The Trial and The Castle and Metamorphosis. my take: both very tough reads i'd say. both miserable. contemporary resonances re. eg. personal alienation. hard not to admit the writer's talent.
Simon Christopher Buck (@spacemannorbear.bsky.social) reply parent
gosh I write bass parts (among others, but i play the bass) that i can't play. or at least not until after many hours of practice!!

emerged from two hours of rehearsing with stops and do-it-again and let's-try-this. makes a change from jam session style - which has it's place - no stopping keep going, even though no audience. PS all this very nice repurposed premises which used to be what used to be called a "public convenience"

i've a slightly foxed SH copy of the Reader's Digest Book of British Wild Plants. book itself is a really unusual shape and proportions and has simply stunning illustrations.

this summer i've accumulated a considerable spend on my current big band recording project (my own expense) despite all the musicians playing pro bono. even reasonably-priced studio fees mount up. so i'm looking into less expensive options. #GonzoRecording

went to the "tilting yard" at Hampton Court Palace - edge of London - where King Henry VIII had had a serious jousting accident. his huge horse landed on him, mount and rider both heavily armoured. seemed to go from renaissance man to monster thereafter. wonder what happened to the KS i voted for?

but there are a lot of cyclists in London and it is a relatively safe place to cycle. sure there are a few deadly black-spots but in general, experienced cyclist do not find it dangerous. people who have never cycled through the streets of London often think it looks more dangerous than it is. IMHO

started cursive about age 7. in the UK system i'd already had 2 years of school. in my day few people received pre-school education. the calligraphy style was Marion Richardson. age 9 i changed schools and we did Italic. my uncle was a doctor and taught himself Italic for more legible prescriptions.

stuff this for a game of soldiers. I loathe voice interface except for certain very narrow use cases like picking menu options over the phone. if i think aloud I go round in circles several times before getting to the point. i clarify my thoughts best in writing (paper or screen).
