More than 60,000 students in North East ISD in San Antonio will walk into classrooms on Tuesday with NO BOOKS or with “library closed” signs blocking access to classroom libraries as a result of Senate Bill 13.
The reactions by historians to *that* Nature paper are because we are routinely consistently told by both laypeople and too many STEM colleagues that our methods are irrelevant, nonexistent or inferior, and our fields pointless. Our institutions agree. Miss me with defending STEM in this moment.

The maddening thing is that we know EXACTLY how to prevent this. Yes, kids should get vaccinated, test, stay home when sick, mask as much as possible. But even without any of that: Better ventilation and filtration in schools can MASSIVELY reduce viral spread, for all sorts of respiratory diseases.

Need to know if whoever named the asteroid Kleopatra's moons was a Twilight fan, because their names are very Renesmee-esque (Alexhelios and Cleoselene, after Cleopatra's children Alexander Helios and Cleopatra Selene II). I'm so confused by people's inability to be even a little community-minded. Like yeah, I didn't have a community like this when I was learning how to code, but it's great that it exists now! We should be encouraging users to work collaboratively, not isolate themselves and wasting time with chatgpt
Moreover, if someone is posting with a request for help with the code, this is a good thing!! They're curious! They're trying to learn! The least the rest of us can do as experienced users is HELP, and not point them directly to the plagiarism machine out of laziness. Depressing and disappointing.

Let's be clear: all the AI in edtech stuff (Canvas, Blackboard, Grammarly, Duolingo, OpenAI, the rest) is all about the "lock-in" - locking in students as subscribers or institutions via long-term license agreements for value generation. Is there good pedagogic evidence for it? No.
And finally the best evidence that AI is truly a revolutionary general purpose technology isn’t its midness but it’s politics. It is very good at undercutting, demoralizing and casualizing labor across a variety of fields, known & as-yet known. I wouldn’t dismiss that. “Mid” is a political tactic.
