For now I'm willing to accept the possibility that Adnan Hussain is not a dyed in the wool transphobe and may just be someone who doesn't really understand the issues and got their initial impressions of it from a bunch TERFs.
Space Yak (@spaceyak.bsky.social)
Personally, I find this article reassuring. It took him a while to bring up the subject of trans rights but I'm glad he did.

Labour are not really progressive these days, but it's been clear that their attitude has been to firebomb anyone to the left and leave voters nowhere to go. Labour have no interest in cooperating.

Got quibbles with that kind of thing though: - How are these indices calculated? The wealth of the super rich is incredibly opaque. - Older UK people have lots of housing wealth which hides the issue

What's really appalling is the damage these organisations have inflicted on people. People hate these monsterous organisations for good reasons.

I agree with the sentiment for entirely different reasons. Mostly that they love a cutting taxes far too much and seem to have forgotten about your great great uncle's work.

Disagree with this, calling them facists might be like chipping away at a wall with a toothpick, but tat's no reason to stop doing it. Also, the "more effective" tactic of pointing out that these far right protestors are domestic abusers etc just justifies that fascist label.

I just don’t think it’s unreasonable to say the public should be worried when a former senior Labour MP, who famously helped General Augusto Pinochet evade facing trial for crimes against humanity including torture, argues that Britain should ‘decouple’ from the European Convention on Human Rights.

Not sure Turkey is that much of a cautionary tale, they may have experienced high inflation but GDP seems unaffected.

I often wonder why the tax system has a huge bias against working people. I think it stems from the days when boomers were still in work, since older folk were generally a lot poorer back then.
Space Yak (@spaceyak.bsky.social)
Not sure how I feel about this one because I feel that income from doing nothing should be taxed at least as heavily as working income. But obviously while landlords have the power to pass that tax on to tenants, it's not going to help.

This is a fine example of the kind of superficial bullshit used to justify so many bad decisions everywhere. So much bad shit has been done with complex pointy headed justifications that collapse in the face of reality.

With absolutely no respect, this is utter nonsense. The People's Vote Campaign was quite deliberately designed to split Labour's vote. This was all documented in the coverage of it's collapse.

As best as I can tell, there is inequality but it's not something you'll find in earnings data. I think the crystalized generational inequality @ironeconomist.bsky.social mentions explains a lot here, that inequality has definitely skewed towards the already rich.

Definitely something to this. It feels like working households are being squeezed at both ends here with both no/low wage growth plus rising costs (housing especially) from intergenerational inequality.
Space Yak (@spaceyak.bsky.social) reply parent
I have looked at that data before and I just can't square the "actually society is quite equal" story with the society we actually have. There are things the kind of surface analysis of the data is missing, because things are quite clearly not fine.
Space Yak (@spaceyak.bsky.social)
I see analysis like this all the time and it seems obvious that it's missing something, the data is telling stories that don't really match what we see in wider society.

While obviously the invasion of Ukraine was Russian aggression, a lot of this seems pretty Russophobic. For example, the Afghan government asked the Soviets for help in 79 and the Soviets only agreed reluctantly. Ukraine in 1919 was already part of the Russian empire.

Space Yak (@spaceyak.bsky.social) reply parent
Strikes me that price stability is quite a one dimensional stability. And we've seen instability manifest in other places GFC is the obvious one here. Plus things like ever rising house prices, that's going to boil over at some point (some would say it already has).
Space Yak (@spaceyak.bsky.social) reply parent
What's missed however is that inflation has in the past acted as an important economic safety valve. The current 2% inflation target is effectively an industrial policy that favours the finance industry rather than a guarantee of stability.
Space Yak (@spaceyak.bsky.social) reply parent
They can, but for a large number of understandable reasons usually choose not to. Inflation is one of a number of these reasons all centered around economic stability.
