thoughts cause things to happen. The analogue of the Traveller is a sentient crystal spider called K’Tlk who invented the drive. There’s no real equivalent to Kosinski though. I can’t recommend the book highly enough, and K’Tlk makes some appearances in her other Trek novels.

I don’t know if they considered it but the episode, written by Diane Duane, is basically a rewritten version of her TOS novel “The Wounded Sky” where the Enterprise tests a “creative physics” engine which takes them first very far in our universe and then into another where

I think it was this episode that really cemented for me how different DS9 was. In TNG, someone would’ve made a rousing speech and Mullibock would’ve given up his home for the common good. Instead Kira has to make a choice that has a “clear” but difficult right answer and he hates her for it.
SpooWriter (@spoowriter.bsky.social) reply parent
Ooh, that is a very terrible combination indeed. Hope you feel better soon.

One of many awful, awful parents in Star Trek, which I know is For The Drama but it makes me sad. Thank goodness for Miles O’Brien, Ben Sisko, and (I’m absolutely positive) Tom and B’Elanna.

I love the Traveler (and this episode; I used to have a “if there’s nothing wrong with me…” shirt) but part of me always wishes he were the sentient crystal spider he could have been.

“City of Ember” is a really well-done adaptation of the novel, except for two things. 1. There were no giant rat things. 2. The book explicitly says Lina’s name is pronounced with a long /I/ sound and they use a long /e/ I the movie.

For those of you just joining us, because of all my health issues last year, a huge portion of my hair fell out in the space of a couple weeks. It’s been slowly growing back and for the first time today I was able to put it in a (tiny, kinda pathetic) ponytail. 🎉

Dear para sub who made that snarky comment and spent all day with the judgey face: I promise you I’m judging myself at least ten times harder than you are and if I had a magic wand, don’t you’d think I’d use it? We’ve had ONE fully staffed week all year. It’s been rough, okay?

The thing about “No One Mourns the Wicked” is that its very lyrics question wickedness. There’s at least one person (Glinda) mourning Elphaba and Glinda the Good is going to die alone, which the song says wicked people do. “Ding Dong the Witch Is Dead” should be the go-to.

Also, fully knowing the word “love” is being used as a loose equivalent to “strong man’chi,” I love seeing how much Banichi has grown to genuinely love Bren as a person. When he says affectionately something along the lines of “your aishid knew you’d say that?” Ugh.

BTW, I have now officially made it past where I last left off CJ Cherryh’s Foreigner series. I cannot believe I’m gonna say this, but Uncle Tatiseigi has grown on me. Also, adult Cajeiri is gonna change the universe. Speaking of which: a relatively pointless question.

SpooWriter (@spoowriter.bsky.social) reply parent
This is especially true of “Star Trek,” whose main ethos is finding humanity in others. (I’m actually kind of surprised Discovery never did one, because that was a huge theme of the show overall.) It’s a perfect Trek story because it’s such a Trek thing. (2/4)
SpooWriter (@spoowriter.bsky.social)
Pretty much every sci-fi show back to at least “Galactica 1980**” has done an “Enemy Mine” episode and because of the plot of “Enemy Mine,” they are always very good. ** this episode does not justify “Galactica 1980” but it *is* very good (1/4)

Or maybe people sometimes take Tylenol because pregnancy is hard and that’s the only thing they can take and then some of their kids who would’ve been autistic anyway are autistic.
SpooWriter (@spoowriter.bsky.social)
So here’s the thing. Even if there is correlation with Tylenol use there’s no way they can prove causation. Maybe there’s a genetic link between low tolerance for pain in pregnancy and autism. Maybe there’s a genetic link between back problems and autism.

SpooWriter (@spoowriter.bsky.social) reply parent
I can’t speak to the “fidelity” of the adaptation of the Foundation novels because I’ve never successfully managed to read them (turns out if we’re talking scifi classics, I’m a Clarke girl not an Asimov one) but I’ve seen people say the best part of Foundation is the new stuff.
SpooWriter (@spoowriter.bsky.social) reply parent
Different genres have different “needs” for lack of a better term. What might work in a book might not work on screen - for instance the centuries-long descent of the Numenoreans would require multiple characters to know and care about if not for the time compression in Rings of Power.
SpooWriter (@spoowriter.bsky.social)
Look. The “faithfulness” of an adaptation to the source text doesn’t always mean a better product. See, for instance, the two Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movies. Dentist dad backstory aside, the 2005 version is far more “faithful” to the book. But I know few who’d call it a better movie.
