In Sorcerer’s Crusade there are two different ancestor conventions for the Void Engineers. One based on going to the heavens and one nakedly based on doing Age of Exploration. The split is clearly to split the sympathetic from the indefensible.
The internet’s SpringaldJack (@springaldjack.bsky.social) reply parent
I remember the 1st Convention Book for the Void Engineers was from the perspective of a Nephandic infiltrator as part of a metaplot premise that the Technocracy as a whole was essentially hollowed out by high level Nephandi. At other times this hook would be used for the Traditions.

The internet’s SpringaldJack (@springaldjack.bsky.social) reply parent
My go to space for the Traditions has always been that they have since their founding had to encompass lists of both political and metaphysical disagreement to build a coalition, even as they constantly have found they can’t always absorb as much contradiction as they maybe feel they must

I don’t really remember about what Etherites have officially had though
The internet’s SpringaldJack (@springaldjack.bsky.social) reply parent
If you look at either set of WW era trad books or the Onyx Path Lore of the Traditions there’s often formal internal factions, and I definitely agree that all of the Traditions have space for villains
The internet’s SpringaldJack (@springaldjack.bsky.social) reply parent
Also I see them broadly as a Tradition of scientific dissent of largely unreconciled-with-each-other as well as with the Technocratic Union
The internet’s SpringaldJack (@springaldjack.bsky.social) reply parent
Also later Etherite material placed a lot of emphasis on the I believe fictional Arabic text they are based on, which makes me think of illuminationism
The internet’s SpringaldJack (@springaldjack.bsky.social) reply parent
One is that in 1e I think…there’s some hints that some parts of Quantum Mechanics are a stealth victory of the etheric perspective which is interesting because Einstein is both a major hero of the 1st part of developing Quantum, but he really hated later developments in QM
The internet’s SpringaldJack (@springaldjack.bsky.social) reply parent
So I have some thoughts on how to some extent we can rescue or partially rescue the Society of Ether (as they’re named in M20th)

One of the direct effects of the fact that the politics of a work of art are often not particularly coherent is that sometimes you get politically opposite readings of the same text that are cogent rather than tendentious. (One does also see tendentious readings of texts of course)
The internet’s SpringaldJack (@springaldjack.bsky.social)
“All art is political” definitely does not mean that “all mass market commercial art has coherent well thought out political positions that speak clearly for one or another real-world political tendency”

Thus, Delany's Nevèrÿon books, which look like sword-and-sandals fantasy, are really SF: the new-thing proposed is the advent of writing, and reading; the future (eventually) pointed-to is, well, us. Modernity. Eventually.

—Anyway, SF as a mode in this grammar proposes or hinges on the advent of a novum, a new-thing, and the working out of the implications of that new-thing, moving us toward a conceptual breakthrough of some sort, and through it, beyond, to some new place.
