This was a bi-partisan bill supported by many Rs in the #ksleg + the Board of Regents & State Board of Education. Rs promptly defunded it in 2025 (coincidentally not an election year.) People concerned with reading scores don’t defund proven methods to better teach reading.
My entire life, I've listened to conservatives rail against federal government overreach. But they support a decision that says feds can detain anyone at any time for absolutely no reason. Their rhetoric has always been total BS.

I grew up in the Bronx and have lived my adult life in Kansas, Texas and Oklahoma. This rural-urban back-and-forth is simply a myth to keep us divided. People are basically the same. They care about their families, schools & communities & almost all would help a stranger in need.
Salaries, vehicles, war gear for eight ICE agents and some videotaping; this stupid vignette probably cost taxpayers some change. But we have to cut health care and SNAP.

Mamdani won either way but more importantly the voters won. Mamdani got the most votes the old way and his lead increased with ranked-choice. In other words, in a crowded field of candidates, an overwhelming majority of voters made Mamdani their first or second choice. That sounds like democracy.
