It's in my library queue. I need to read more Ray Bradbury. His short stories are amazing, but the only novel I have read by him is, of course, Fahrenheit 451.

Well I survived new teacher training in my new district and I am so glad I left my old district. Now, I have 2 more weeks of training before I meet my students but the staff here has been so warm and welcoming so far.

I decided to pursue my M.Ed. because the VDOE requires 5 graduate level education classes…and for just 5 more, I can earn the degree and get paid more so I’m going for it. I’m halfway done right now.
It’s similar in VA where I teach. I switched careers to become a teacher & I’m on one of those temporary license programs but I’m also jumping through those $$$ time and money hoops towards full licensure. I will be fully licensed at the end of this school year in 2026.
No idea. 🤣 I am probably dealing with students who hate to read, but I will find out for sure when I meet them. I have been doing research and it looks like there are some amazing YA and middle grade books out there.

I am a book person but reading it now, I can see how this one would be appealing via audio. There are lots of audiobook readers on this thread.
I absolutely loved The Martian but didn’t like Artemis so I will let you know what I think about this book once I finish it.
I’m about 50 pages in so far and I’m enjoying it. I loved The Martian but thought Artemis was rather bland so I will see how this one compares to his other books. The protagonists tend to “think out loud” and this doesn’t bother me, but I get that it may be off-putting to some.
I am embarassed to admit that I have not yet read the SF classic Dune and it's sequels, but I love the movies. I have seen the SyFy mini series and the more recent movie adaptations. "The spice must flow." Dune is on my TBR pile.

I will never use AI to grade anything. I consider it unethical. I also avoid using it for lesson plans too. I prefer to either use my own brain or get ideas from other teachers.

Thanks for your own article and links. I have had a very rough year teaching (Admin. headaches) so I have been trying to survive this year, but I feel like I am the only teacher out here with such a strong opinion AGAINST the use of AI. It bothers me when students (and teachers!) use it so much.

I am able to take constructive feedback, but I have been criticized for everything I do this year and micromanaged to death. Therefore, peace out, I will move on to another school next year. I hope I am able to find a more supportive environment.

Yes but on the plus side (I guess?) my trauma is all related to my job. Navigating a toxic workplace has kept me too busy to worry about the reality that is the U.S. right now.

I have not read the book series, but I was bored with Season 1. I am glad it got better for you. I may read the books at some point. Which do you prefer: TV show or books? Books are always better IHMO, but my favorite screen adaptation remains the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy.
The amount of stupid data collection I have had to do this year: 3 writing prompts that I must grade on 8 different standards per essay, multiple choice CFAs every quarter, a multiple choice benchmark test 2X a year, 2 No Red Ink benchmarks so Admin. can spend 5 minutes looking at a spreadsheet.
It’s a toxic workplace for me. I’m a 2nd year HS English teacher who is tired of being criticized for everything I do. I’m hoping my next school has better people in the building. (I’ve heard good Administrations & co-workers exist?) P.S. It’s not my students. They are the only ones keeping there.

I have been following this story on YouTube and the broadcast news reporter on top of this story has been doing an excellent job. I don’t have posters in my room, but I try to create an inclusive, welcoming environment for ALL students.
I am so bad about doing poetry. My toxic work environment is killing me. I hope to be in a better place next year. I've learned some painful lessons this year: it's all about spreadsheets and data, not students. 😩
