Well, I was supposed to be home from Ireland today. But we were over the Atlantic when the plane developed a problem and we had to return to Dublin. A bit scary, of course. When we landed, an airport manager came on board, apologized, and explained to us the EU/UK passenger bill of rights.

We must unite against those who seek to divide us.

I know many people, particularly from London's diverse communities, are feeling extremely worried following the events this weekend. It takes me back to how I felt growing up in the ’70s and ’80s, when far-right political parties marched on our streets. The leaders of the far-right are once again attempting to hijack our flag, with minorities being intimidated and fear, hatred and division being sown. As Londoners, and as proud Brits, we must unite to reject the far-right – just as we have many times before. But it’s going to take a huge effort from us all – from people of all races and backgrounds, who are willing to stand up for our British values of equality, inclusion and mutual respect. As Mayor, I'll continue to do everything I can to challenge the far-right and all those who peddle the politics of fear and division. I urge other politicians and Londoners to do the same. MAYOR OF LONDON, SADIQ KHAN

This seems to me a good statement from Gavin Calver, CEO of Evangelical Alliance. We could do with a few more of these.

Alt text: Screenshot of a phone note written on September 15, 2025 at 1:27 PM. Text reads: “Travelling through London on Saturday afternoon with my daughter after a football match; the city I love felt hostile and deeply divided. This was not the city I recognised. I am a Londoner & have grown up appreciating our diversity, vibrancy & togetherness. Yet there is so much mistrust, fear and animosity right now. I’ve always supported freedom of speech; I value our right to peaceful protest. But I am deeply concerned to see some masking racism within the language of patriotism and, even worse, the Christian faith. We need to do all we can to call out the infiltration of violence and racism, so that we can create space for open, honest and necessary conversations about migration, race and how we build a thriving society in the UK for everyone. My fervent prayer is that we, the church, model a better way. Lord, help us to we do all we can to unite across all ethnicities, generations & classes. Help us say & show that all are created equal, all people bear God’s image and that Jesus died for all. There can be no place for prejudice in our society. Come on church! Let's unite, love one another & work together as one to make Jesus known.”

Here’s a poem called ‘English Roundabouts’.

English Roundabouts They’re making the roundabouts great again by painting the flag of St George to keep our circular road systems safe from the dark, satanic hordes. What do they want? Patriotic junctions! When do they want them? Before it’s too late. Good old-fashioned English roundabouts, as decreed by Alfred the Great. Behold the sacred intersection, this blessed plot, this septic isle. English roundabouts for English people, draped in red and white and bile. St George is cross, as well he may be – whipped-up hate, he’s seen before. Give way to the right, the road signs rage, and the far right most of all. Brian Bilston

Went to Kent today for a nice day out, had lunch in a tea room and a nice beer in a pleasant pub, saw quite a lot of flags. Then got home and read this piece about the town where we’d spent the day. Grim grim grim.

I think about this poem by Ian Duhig — about Jo Cox, the Labour MP assassinated by a man shouting ‘Britain first’ — every day at the moment. No other contemporary poet has looked so clearly at the political reality of the far right as a minority who must always be appeased

Rue Rue Jo Cox, Députée Britannique, a street sign in Burgundy reads, Assassinée pour ses convictions. No British road is named after her, I found on returning home, for fear it could have proved controversial. I remembered in Shakespeare rue even for ruth, called 'herb of grace' because it was used in exorcisms, by the angel to clean Adam's eyes, and Gulliver back home for his nose against the smell of his countrymen.

Today people went around my neighborhood in north east London spray painting St George’s crosses onto people’s homes. Many of these houses have non British people living in them. This is getting very dark, very quick.

While everyone on the Proms was waving flags, I was waving a wand toy around the living room for an excited small cat to chase. Especially when you're dabbling at it under the door with your paws apparently #Caturday

Ah yes if black and brown people throw a party we need to scan their faces. White supremacists organising a hate march do not need to worry about their privacy. The police have them covered. This btw is also why everyone arguing for digital id in this country is either naive or dangerous.

2h ago 10.29 BS1 Police are not using live facial recognition in its policing of the 'Unite the Kingdom' demonstration which is beginning on London's south bank, reports the PA news agency. It said: • We're using a mobile CCTV van to help monitor the build up of crowds. Officers have been asked if it's using 'live facial recognition' - we can confirm it is not. The live facial recognition technology - which captures people's faces in real-time CCTV cameras - was used in the policing operation at the Notting Hill carnival.

Yes it is very much a garden, just a wildlife one. I'd be nervous of the bog garden so close to the house foundations too

The pollinator pathway thing looks nice, but how much are they doing with native plants that feed moth and butterfly caterpillars or have those symbiotic relationships? #GardenersWorld

On one level you have to hand it to the box tree moth caterpillars, they are so efficient. Ate their way down my street in a matter of days. I still see the odd moth around #GardenersWorld

This just makes me want to scream. Quickly throwing up tower blocks of "luxury apartments" so badly built they have to be evacuated less than 3 years after they were finished is not going to solve the housing crisis. It's such a waste of land, money &resources
