Today's viewing is The Outsider with Ben Mendelsohn, Julianne Nicholson, Cynthia Erivo, Jason Bateman and Mare Winningham. It's outstanding in every regard. I always miss the best productions until several years after they premiere.

I'm giving Mare of Easttown another watch. I'd forgotten how how incredible it is and how stellar the entire cast is. I can't remember a drama series that I've ever seen that is this uncommonly good.

Ok. While I agree Caitríona is fantastic in this and she stands out...calling her the "star" of the film is over-the-top hype. It smacks of desperation by the distributors.
Work priorities and schedules first. 🙂 This has been an interesting film rollout. There's no word of it showing anywhere, but the promos are on. It makes me think it's going to be a very limited release & then moved immediately on to streaming. *I could very well be wrong*

Classic movie Monday. The music and costumes are very dated, but as a coming of age story it's timeless. And John Travolta makes those very difficult dance moves look easy. He earned that Oscar nod *also I just realized in his solo dance scene he looks like a gay stripper*

Well many of the courts are trying and succeeding to keep a lot of his craziness in check, but it keeps coming at such a rapid-fire pace that I'm afraid most Americans are like frogs in a pot of water that's heating up and they're not paying attention.

You know what I found interesting, several American reviewers liked it, and the reviewers of major UK publications called it "laughable, atrocious, but watchable." I am half English so maybe that's it. 🙂

Yeah and I absolutely get that because the actors are great, the costumes and sets are great. It's not that I really dislike it, I just don't love it. That's the only way I can describe it.
BOMB isn't doing it for me. Fine actors and solid production for the most part but the storytelling is nowhere near as strong as s1-s3 Outlander and I'm not taken with the romantic couples at all. So I'll just re-watch season 1 OL. 🙂

It just doesn't have the same beauty, intrigue, stellar acting and lead actors with uncanny on-screen chemistry. It's trying to be all of that from the early Outlander episodes but it isn't succeeding and it's not the actors, costume designers or set decorators' fault.
I'm an Outlander fan (mostly the first 3 seasons) since 2022. I've tried to watch the prequel, Blood of My Blood. It has very good actors and the costumes & cinematography are good but the writing and overall experience are...off. There's no originality, no addictive romance. It's a weak spin-off.
It's like Ferris Beuhler pretending to be the Sausage King of Chicago so he and his friends can dine fancy while ditching school.

The production and actors are good, at least from what I've seen so far.
Hmm I was okay with her opinions until she made it all about her..."well I hate it when they do things that are dumb, but at least it adds to my book sales like nothing else." 😄 I mean, she certainly doesn't hold back. The show really is a copy of the original though. That's MBR's doing.
Also that's a lot of money that would best be used elsewhere.

I thought the production was really good, the cinematography, the costumes, the acting...but the writing! I think I've seen 8th graders write better than that.

Yes I was at the premiere at TIFF last year, in the second row from the stage. Way too close for me to watch a movie. But...it was a nice seat when they all came out for a brief talk afterwards.
My 16-year-old cat is staring at me with a look that is a combination of "I'm annoyed with you. Where is my gourmet paté for dinner?" and "Why are you making me suffer? Where's my gourmet paté for dinner?" She has perfected this look.
I can't wait for people to see it. But somebody please cast this incredibly talented lady in a comedy next. 😄
