“They’re taking our jobs” was always a lie. Alabama proved it. Alabama tried a “tough” immigration law, and it backfired hard. Immigrants fled, crops rotted, and farms collapsed. Americans tried to step in but couldn’t last a day. They’re not taking your jobs; they’re doing the jobs you won’t do.
One of the most remarkable things of the last 9 months is how many Americans seem to believe the President is all powerful and Congress has no say. Actually Congress has been ineffective by choice. It has immense power if it had the courage to use it.

We can't allow ourselves to become numb to mass shootings. What happened today in Minneapolis is heartbreaking, and Michelle and I are praying for the parents who have lost a child or will be sitting at their hospital bedside after yet another act of unspeakable, unnecessary violence.
It’s the first week of school for many—a time that should be filled with joy, not grief. Those children in Minnesota were at Mass when their lives were stolen. My heart goes out to all impacted by this act of violence. Gun violence has no place in our schools, our churches, or our communities.
