Also, someone who has a blank expression while while feeling emotions is described as having a "flat affect." This trait is often ascribed to autistic people. People may also have flat affect after a traumatic event--others expect them to be crying & wailing, but they seem calm & even.

For those wondering, it's used as a clinical way to describe observable signs of emotion without ascribing an emotion, which is an internal state. For example, it's inaccurate to say, "She was happy during the activity" unless she told me that. But I can say, "She had a positive affect."

Huh. In Japanese, "kanji" is the word for borrowed Chinese characters with ji (ε) meaning character. I had assumed "emo" was borrowed from English as being short for emotion. I wondered if this seeming meaning contributed to the easy adoption of the word emoji in English.
