The highest quality studies try to account for possible confounders in their study design. This can be challenging though as many confounders can be at play.
Susan Healey (@susanhealey.bsky.social) reply parent
Confounding factors means that, when comparing the difference in an outcome between groups treated or not treated, researchers must consider whether the difference is truly because of treatment or if alternate explanations are possible.
Susan Healey (@susanhealey.bsky.social) reply parent
Researchers have been studying this since the early days of SSRIs. The problem isnāt a lack of studies, itās that the findings are inconclusive - largely because the large number of confounders make it difficult to interpret study results

The long-term benefits to Canadians of more integrated systems is huge - and long overdue. The Decibel podcast just did a great episode on our fragmented medical record systems. Absolutely worth a listen!

So Trudeau took action. Before Parliament was prorogued, there was a bill being tabled to introduce mandated data interoperability between the different medical record systems.
Susan Healey (@susanhealey.bsky.social) reply parent
Trudeau, in an interview, said this affected not just pandemic data but the ability of provinces to share data on the success or failure of health policies. āHow can they learn from each other if they canāt share basic information?ā
Susan Healey (@susanhealey.bsky.social) reply parent
It left provinces gathering data manually from hospitals, clinics, and labs and cramming it into Excel spreadsheets to gather their own data and to submit to the federal govt - a slow & painful process.
Susan Healey (@susanhealey.bsky.social) reply parent
Something else we may soon be thanking Trudeau for: In the early days of the pandemic, Trudeau was appalled to find out that gathering data on cases, hospitalizations, deaths, and outbreaks was like pulling teeth. The mish-mash of medical record systems between and within provinces was the problem.
