i agree that math has a more objective measure of understanding than any other field i can think of. i just have a deep frustration about how grades can favor "you moved the symbols correctly" over "you understand this" without a motivated, caring instructor
no doubt this is true for most undergrad math (calc, lin alg, and the like) but i'm curious if it holds in proof-based areas. sure a student found the eigenvalues/vectors of a matrix but do they know what those tell us about a linear operator? that gets fuzzy
even in math and physics! say a student dropped a negative sign during some arithmetic leading to a nonsensical answer (e.g. negative mass). is that just a little goof they didn't have time to correct or a red flag they don't understand a concept?
while i'm pretty cynical about A-F grading systems, i'm not trying to say "evaluation is a fools errand". but anyone who brags about their GPA needs to teach an intro college class of 40+ students before they tell me a letter grade is an objective metric about learning
close mentorship (think having an advisor or a seminar class) where an instructor can closely evaluate and nurture is typically reserved for students who are already skilled at test taking
timed and standardized tests favor people who are "good at taking tests"; take home assignments invite academic dishonesty; open ended projects are hard to grade on objective scales. trying to measure learning is a minefield and we act like it's a simple task
