It begs the question: What's worthy of our time and lives in this moment and the future? If they've enabled oppressive practices and policies, perhaps we build fresh when all this is over. The founding fathers wrote on behalf of the white men of their time, and I don't think they saw beyond that.
As we progress in our current political climate, I find myself less concerned with how to save the "democratic" institutions that never served everyone and have so easily fallen into corrupt hands. Perhaps our efforts are better spent in considering how we create new and better institutions.
Keep the pressure on them! They will try to rehab their image with a new CEO, but if they continue to capitulate to the far right, nothing will actually change.

The flaw in this example is the bad actor behind these headlines and the reader who doesn't question it. And it isn't just the NYT. It's a flagrant bias in much of western media. Paywalled or not, they've lost my trust and the trust of many others.
Recent example to discuss your point regarding "accuracy": There are numerous NYT articles with headlines that read as the "murder" of Israeli people and the "dying" of Palestinian people. On the surface, you could argue for its "accuracy," but it's biased and a reprehensible dereliction of duty.
This is a good point, and I see what you're getting at, but a purchased article doesn't equal quality. Paywalled journalism is not immune to disinformation and bias. Bad actors from owners to CEOs, board members, editors, reporters, and readers who read without critical analysis are all fatal flaws.
