As an English teacher, I advise my students’ parents to buy them a good mix of reading material. Manga is great, as long as they also read regular novels. They need to “exercise” their imagination regularly, and, while mangas and comics are imaginative, their art is a shortcut to visualization.

When I taught English in high school, I made sure to show how the rules of grammar work. For instance, I showed them the rules for making verbs past tense (when to double the consonant, etc.). The lights going on was always fun to see (“Oh, so THAT’S why!”).
I hate when people look at the past and dismiss the art and fashion from then as “awful” and “dated.” Look, Star Wars was amazing when it came out. I was a sophomore going into my junior year in high school, and it looked like nothing I had seen before.
Tropes are storytelling shorthand. For instance, Chekhov’s Gun simply lays out that the story teller should avoid showcasing a prop without having a plan to use it later in the story. Cliches are phrases or actions that have been so overused that they’ve lost their impact on most audiences.
Really wish they would continue the anime “So What? I’m a Spider!” Loved the slow progression of the main character and would love to see more. #anime
