Peacefully protesting is a right. It’s completely un-American and needlessly provocative for Trump to deploy the National Guard and Marines against Americans. These are unlawful orders.
Hegseth deployed troops to Southern California without funding for food, water, fuel, or equipment. Marines are trained for military combat – not law enforcement. Trump must rescind his orders, Hegseth must resign, & law enforcement should be handled by state/local authorities.
The right to peacefully protest is protected by the Constitution. But no one has the right to destroy property or commit violence. These are crimes and they will be prosecuted.
Trump’s federalization of the CA National Guard under 10 USC § 12406 is illegal. The law requires that orders be issued “through the Governors of the States.” Gov Gavin Newsom has not issued the orders. Guard troops in LA are following unlawful orders. law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/10…
I agree with Gov Gavin Newsom that Trump’s take over of the CA National Guard is purposefully inflammatory. I also note this federalization is being done under 10 U.S.C. § 12406, which means the Guard troops will still be subject to the prohibitions in the Posse Comitatus Act.
