Hi. I’m John. I like books, coffee, games, and making stories with friends. Part of a fun ttrpg actual play podcast with Daggerheart at thenaturolls.com I’m also second in command at a middle school. 🫡

He’s literally one of my all time favorites. I’ve read everything he has written. Will definitely be watching this. Thanks so much!

Jaws 50th anniversary on IMAX. Highly recommend.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
A link to the game might help: www.parlettgames.uk/patience/pen...
John (@teecha.bsky.social)
Apropos to nothing #ttrpg related this patience game, discovered by my 8 year old, has become a bit of an obsession. Love that there is basically always a way to win as long as you play it well. Still feels fresh every time. Pack of cards is still hard to beat for all kinds of fun.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
I just want to play around with these adversaries. 😏
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
I love everything about this! Really want to try some stuff from the void.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
Combat always shines ✨ Any PC creations to particularly like?
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
It’s like you’re Sméagol and I’m Frodo. It’s going to be quite a journey.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, I’ve only really heard good things about it overall. I had some experience playing DnD on it and it was definitely a good one. Just am trying to snag that free hosting to get started.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
I blame @revealingtoomuch.bsky.social. 😶🌫️
John (@teecha.bsky.social)
So I took over GMing @thenaturolls.com and this is the first episode of my arc. Was super nervous but have been real happy with how things turned out. Welcome to the Scorchborn Saga. Some just want to watch the world burn. #daggerheart #ttrpg
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
Home brewing in Foundry, you mean? I was pretty blown away when I saw the initial release so can only imagine how it’ll keep going from here.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
The tutorials online are fantastic! You need to decide if you want to host in the cloud or locally and after that I’d say most people can follow the steps without much difficulty. Not sponsored. If you can catch it on the right day you can get free hosting here: foundryvtt.wiki/en/setup/hos...
John (@teecha.bsky.social)
Thinking I’m going to get a @foundryvtt.bsky.social instance going to play around with foundryborne just because it seems fun. Plus more #daggerheart just means more fun. 😏
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
@delilahsdawson.bsky.social pull quote and recommended from Clay get me immediately on board. @revealingtoomuch.bsky.social might need to get in on this.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
Faerie guardians unite!! Let’s go! Unstoppable is SO good and guardians are a blast. Where did this character sheet come from?
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
How did it go?! What kinda characters did folks make? Always love hearing about all the mixes of ancestries and classes.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
Demiplane is great but VTT support is pretty limited. I play on Roll20 with a group online though and it works just fine. If you want to get a short campaign going the “mad libs” style from the book is a great starting point, too.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
Foundation, I think. First one I read as an adult when I was actually trying to get into reading. Definitely did the trick. Not sure how much I’d be into that one these days though.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
Enjoy! The book is so dang good. Sablewood is a great one shot to try to give everyone a taste for combat and what it is all about.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
They’re so much fun! Can get pretty ridiculous which is also awesome. The whole collaborative thing is so baked into the game I feel like PCs can help themselves but do it.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
What was your favorite part ?
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
Think you’d prolly enjoy Daggerheart. I’ve had more experience with that than DnD but combat, even at level 1, is super fun. I remember playing DnD and missing for a whole combat and almost dying. Between being stronger, and working with others, there’s always something awesome to do.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
I mean mechanically it is still just a crit, right? A fun name would be nice though. Double crit. Big crit. Maximal critical.
John (@teecha.bsky.social)
Very simple way to sum up how to make things awesome.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
Jaws is way more appropriate than that. 😬
John (@teecha.bsky.social)
Watched Jaws with my 8 year old for the first time. He loved it. Biggest commentary was wondering why everyone smokes and, “this movie has a lot of bad words. I don’t like it. 😂
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
I might have a core edition and limited edition and @demiplane.com. 😬 They’re all so very nice.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
Love this idea. So many fun possibilities with the flavoring and it is so easy to do so. Could also do a sorcerer and flavor the magic to hint at different types of alchemy.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
@demiplane.com is a great place to check it out, too, if you don’t mind digital while you wait. The book is gorgeous and I have both. I still use demiplane a lot though for the easy search. Love the book for longer form reading and browsing.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
Came for the legal commentary. Staying for the ttrpg commentary.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
That’s huge! Get people to really embrace their stories, make new ones, and maybe explore some new things. Can’t wait for the actual gameplay to happen. So many possibilities.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
I think you nailed it - it is a fundamental part of the game like gravity is a fundamental part of the universe. Like gravity people are pulled towards working with one another in fun and creative ways. It’s just so damn good and satisfying to be able to play that way.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
Totally get that. I think the vibes are a very deliberate design choice, honestly. Characters and play are inherently cooperative from the ground up and made to be flavored however you want. Really brings things together.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
Thanks so much!
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
Would our humble @thenaturolls.com actual play podcast be appropriate here ? 🙏
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
What made it so exciting? I’ve definitely experienced it myself but would love to hear from others.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
What was your favorite part of running Daggerheart?
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
This is awesome! Warrior is also 🔥.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
It is fun! But I’d definitely say to make it routine when planning to not overdo it. Have about three options to get things moving one way or another. 3 areas of interest, 3 secrets you can share, 3 things the party can find, 3 bigger forces at work, and obviously to need about a million NPCs. 😂
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
Just don’t get in her way. Or be an innocent mirror in a room. 🪞
John (@teecha.bsky.social)
I love my maps from @tomcartos.bsky.social and @dysonlogos.bsky.social. Couldn’t recommend their patreon’s enough. Anyone have favorite map, token, or you’re creators for running their #trrpg on a VTT? #daggerheart specific is a win, too! But I’d love to hear about awesome artists to support.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent

John (@teecha.bsky.social)
@norsefoundry.com’s Storybook line of dice is gorgeous. Picked up at #gencon Snagged lapis lazuli and couldn’t be happier. Look so nice and feel great in hand. Now we just need them to get together with #daggerheart for some hope and fear dice. 😏
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh so far from it. I’m more @embiodiedvoice.bsky.social than @revealingtoomuch.bsky.social. 🦤
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
I mean I need to build the excitement. Plus I can buy another set today and show them off all at once. 🤩
John (@teecha.bsky.social)
Last day of #gencon for me and it’s been awesome. Played some fun games with friends, bought some dice, and then bought more dice. Also met awesome people from Darrington Press who I couldn’t say enough awesome things about. And all that #daggerheart news is 👌. These folks are doing it right.
John (@teecha.bsky.social)
Oh, Hi Indianapolis.
John (@teecha.bsky.social)
Well I’m going to be at #gencon in a few days. That’s wild! Can’t wait to hang out with friends and do the nerd thing.
John (@teecha.bsky.social)
Thanks for jumping in and following! I’ve found @demiplane.com to be invaluable for @thenaturolls.com and in person GMing. Love looking up any rule that comes up. Also, I make digital character sheets of PCs for easy reference for me. They’re also adding new updates regularly. #daggerheart

Also true! The whole campaign frames thing is brilliant. Gives me so much to play around with.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
Hope it goes well! That is one of the most awesome parts of that campaign frame. Seems like great fun.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
Did you encounter any of the rest mechanics yet where you have to roll for consequences? Seems so awesome.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
Even better is I eventually out a handwritten note in front of me cuz I kept messing it up.
John (@teecha.bsky.social)
Super excited those @demiplane.com folks are awesome. 🥰
John (@teecha.bsky.social)
I did this for a shockingly long period of time.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
😶🌫️
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
I find that they come up with such awesome stuff and are going at such a pace I’m nothing short of impressed. Somehow missed this one but I love how building in more narrative opportunities is obviously such a priority and driven forward regularly.
John (@teecha.bsky.social)
Just Daggerheart things.
John (@teecha.bsky.social)
Thanks to @dodoborne.com for sharing with a bunch of great ideas. Already started doing some of these with my in person group but plenty more to learn to let those dice help drive the story forward and not just be an extra thing.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
This is a great read! I found myself doing some of this more with my in person session yesterday. Definitely can lead to much more tension and excitement.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
Like, You only theater of the mind the dungeon and use the map as reference for you ?
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
Agree that all of these things could be true. Bits and pieces of influences all over.
John (@teecha.bsky.social)
On another note I’m working to hold back from over planning this session. Barely scratched the surface of my initial plans for session 1. Instead I’m trying to reuse, improv, and insert my different ideas into session 2 as they arise. Still hitting my “beats” from #daggerheart core book, too.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
That is some high praise! Still working through this one now and quite digging it. Got some cube vibes? Less torture and horror like but some inspiration maybe? Honestly, not sure that I’ve had a miss with Wendig at the helm.
John (@teecha.bsky.social)
Running session 2 of #daggerheart this weekend with a beautiful @dysonlogos.bsky.social map. But how do you slowly reveal the map to players #ttrpg friends? Printed 2x3 ft. Just cover with construction paper? Going to use it as a reference and then draw a room on my flipmat for combat.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
Thanks for the love!!
John (@teecha.bsky.social)
Started the latest by @chuckwendig.bsky.social and it’s already a banger. His characters always feel authentic, imperfections and all, and I am delighted to have no idea where it is going. That staircase in the woods could go anywhere.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
Can confirm the hex trays are gorgeous and awesome.
John (@teecha.bsky.social)
Latest @naturolls.bsky.social, l'd say, was a success but definitely ended with some tears. Let's just say death moves in #daggerheart are legit. We followed the fiction and though the end result was tough for PCs it was a genuine move forward for the characters. 🥺
John (@teecha.bsky.social)
Think I first encountered this from The Lazy DM but this is critical to building out your world. It is easy to make rumors, hints, and secrets to share and you never know which they will seize onto. This makes it perfect to expand your world, without a ton of prep, based on their interest. #ttrpg
Tab Creations (@tabcreations.com) reposted
GM Tip: Use rumors to seed the world. True, false, or exaggerated—rumors let you foreshadow, misdirect or hint at deeper plots without committing upfront. #ttrpg #dnd #rpg
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
Not sure I’ve been this hyped for a novel in a long time. Appreciate everything @joe-hill.bsky.social does very much. Always heartfelt, genuine, and gets at the core of what makes horror so great.
John (@teecha.bsky.social)
Coming into next session with @naturolls.bsky.social with some narrative driven combat tomorrow. #daggerheart nailed this in the core book. This arc has gone so well so far. Thanks to @revealingtoomuch.bsky.social for setting up a world to let me play in. This is gonna be a great one. #ttrpgs
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
Makes sense! We use roll20 for online and dig it. For my in person I still made demiplane character sheets for PCs so I can have a copy to refer to as we play. Worked great! I’ll use the pathfinder flipmat for a grid next time.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
For in person sessions ?
John (@teecha.bsky.social)
#daggerheart session 1 with this new group was a hit. A lot of meta talk and the main suggestion was to use a grid for combat. Had some social encounters and ended with thief’s approaching. Outpost town environment was a win, too. @demiplane.com character sheets also worked perfect for me. 🥰
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
So glad that demiplane works so well! I can report back it was very much a success. My PCs used and wrote on their character sheets while I brought the demiplane ones up in my laptop so I could help them learn the game and their abilities.
John (@teecha.bsky.social)
Doing final prep for #daggerheart session today and decided to make @demiplane.com character sheets for in person players. Had such a good experience with digital sheets and @naturolls.bsky.social thinking it’ll help me keep track of player abilities, etc and they keep their paper sheets.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
That’s the plan! Was thinking of more of a social encounter but with them being new to #ttrpgs thinking something like like combat might be better. Based on our session 0 they’re hungry to fight some stuff.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
Thanks! Might change my opener around slightly just in case they want to fight right off the bat since I’m sure they will. 🤭
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
This one was an absolute banger. Expertly executed claustrophobic horror with a side of PKD’s what the heck is real.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
Seraph, naturally. Shows devotion through those perfectly cooked potatoes.
John (@teecha.bsky.social)
GMing in person session 1 #daggerheart tomorrow morning and can’t wait. Got a great start, a fun opening map, and lots of little secrets that I can share. Should prolly also tell them although they can fight all the enemies they don’t have to - they’re new to #ttrpgs. 😏
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
I’ve got a squeaky door I can sell you.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
Need a one shot all about the origins of Padre’s Potatoes.
John (@teecha.bsky.social)
Being new to #ttrpgs I feel like the thing I love the most is the unexpected. Moments are had that I could never quite craft on my own and this mutual creation is just 👌.
John (@teecha.bsky.social)
Resisted over planning a ton today. Had some outlines I wanted to setup for my upcoming session 1 but have no idea if anyone will visit these locations. Did come up with ideas that would work in any of the locations. Figure I can flavor them a bit differently and it should work great. #ttrpg
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
Definitely agree with this. It can be tough to improv things like this sometimes but I feel it forces me to make stronger “soft” moves which in turn challenge the PCs and drive things forward. Win all around.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
Bingo! Can’t wait to run the “outpost” town and see how it goes for a group brand new to ttrpgs. I have jagged knife lackeys ready in the shadows if things slow down. 😏
John (@teecha.bsky.social)
Spent some time today on my in person #daggerheart session coming up and the environment and environment stat blocks are a gold mine. Such a great way to bring your setting to life and keep driving the fiction forward; real consequences bring challenges PCs enjoy.
John (@teecha.bsky.social) reply parent
Nothing to see here, podcast friend.
John (@teecha.bsky.social)
Was driving to work and just had a banger of an idea to work into the end of my current #daggerheart arc. SUPER excited for this one. Will have real consequences for some PCs and all drives the fiction forward. Real consequences make it exciting, right?
John (@teecha.bsky.social)
This one has a ton of very silly fun and role play in it. Definitely remember starting to feel like I was getting to know Maz more. I’ll be listening, too! Would love to hear what folks think.
John (@teecha.bsky.social)
Also, cancelling Comcast feels so good.
