That was the goal all along. We tried to warn people who would not vote for Harris as a purity test but they wouldn't listen.

Trump has been playing once again.
He started out as Pentecostal (remember the revival tent healing shows on TV Sunday morning) then realized that the Methodists had more money so he switched. But his school still turned out preachers who had charismatic backgrounds.
And, of course, Falwell and Weyrich settled on abortion instead, which at the time was considered a Catholic issue. The Baptists endorsed Roe v Wade and so did Falwell originally. So you could say the abortion issue sprang straight out of racism and we are still dealing with it today.
Falwell was mad he was going to have to desegregate his schools to receive any federal funds. He tried to get Reagan to kill the Dept of Ed. &, if I remember correctly, Reagan offered him the job but he turned it down. That's why originally Falwell wanted to use desegregation as the wedge issue.
Unfortunately many of them were still rolling in the cash as they had asked for forgiveness. Although being from Tulsa, I remember Oral Roberts saying he saw a 600 ft Jesus who told him he would "take him home" if he didn't raise enough money to keep his school open. And someone gave it to him.
AND every Republican candidate and the GOP platform became anti-abortion. So their scheme worked and so evangelicals still controlled the party
I grew up in the Evangelical church and am very familiar with their tactics and players.
But many had already become one issue voters, ie, abortion. Originally Falwell wanted to use desegregation as the wedge issue but after Paul Weyrich tested issues among Evangelicals, abortion came out on top. It was a strategic, made up issue to get Evangelicals to the voting booth.
And when Reagan formed an alliance with Falwell and brought religion to the policy table.
Good article but what was missing was the alliance between Reagan & Jerry Falwell to bring evangelicals into the party through wedge issues. By bringing religion to the policy table it infected any compromise and exacerbated authoritarian tendencies. Goldwater had warned the party about it.

I've always thought of conservatism as status quo or back to the "good old days" that never existed and progressivism as moving forward and evolving which sometimes means not getting it right but with the goal of adjusting to improve life for everyone.
