The way to bring prices down, is to bring them down. By hook or crook. Supply is absolutely part of that. So are other methods. I don't just want to slow rent's sprint upwards, which is what a supply only approach will lead to. I want to force it down beyond the temporary 10% a housing boom does.

is like saying we don't need universal healthcare because we have the VA. Rent control as it exists in LA is absolutely tiny, purposefully kneecapped, and only able to exist because of grandfathered legislation. We have many tools to deal with housing, why should I limit myself in what we use?
It brings it down 5-10% which isn't nothing, but the gains are temporary. The texas model relies on greenfield sprawl which is not long term. Problem for my/Nithya's LA is that just a 10% decrease, while a good start, would not be enough to curb the crisis. Also saying we have rent control
robust public sector allowing for said sector to be the setter of pricing norms. Empowerment of local housing authorities to set standards of what rent can be. Empowering tenant advocacy group's ability to dispute rent. community land trusts. Buying land and selling specifically to those building.

You brought up rent control and while I could point out that 8000/a month rent is more regressive than capping rent city wide, I would like to point out that we have other tools. (Also the housing policy has been regressive because it was done in poor half assed measures purposefully)
