It's a 4.50 ERA. It was a Game Score of 54. Calling that a "quality start" is exactly what's wrong with this nonsense binary metric. #Cubs
The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social) reply parent
Looks like a pretty standard Hoyer #Cubs team.

Remember how so many #Cubs 'fans' begged Hoyer to trade Nico? How they ignored he consistently delivers near AS-grade bWAR every season? Entering the final month, he's second on the team (to PCA's league-leading 6.2) w/ 5.2.

The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social) reply parent
It's not like they're playing a five-game series against the division-leading Brewers - in Wrigley - or anything. Good thing the #Cubs didn't give up anyone of value for this one season of him.
The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social) reply parent
Promise?
The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social) reply parent
No respect for this 'team'. They're playing the division leader and they look like they're the Rox. They're in Wrigley, with a 5-game series opportunity to claw back into it, and instead, they're just handing their lunch money over to the bully before he even asks. #Cubs
The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social) reply parent
There is something fundamentally wrong w/ this organization. In spite of all the money, from the top down, it simply isn't built and run to win. #Cubs
The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social) reply parent
What incredible weak sauce. A winner would demand to be playing against the Brewers, especially considering it's the one-season player who so much was traded away for. #Cubs
The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social) reply parent
At this rate, the Reds can plan on playing in October, and the only question will be which team wants to less, the Mutts or the #Cubs.
The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social) reply parent
Way to get up against the main division opponent for a 5-game series. It's not like the #Cubs traded away anyone of value for this one season of who is supposed to be the player to finally take a Hoyer team to the playoffs.
The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social)
Horton only manages to last 2.2 IP in the first game of a DH, and the offense only manages 2Hs. Ooof. Just another season of the Hoyer regime. #Cubs

We don't need logos. Run the opaqueness down to put them clearly in the background of the score and tighten up that bug. And present down & distance in a yellow/orange so it draws attention to it, and then let's the viewer move to more general info.

Not by percentage, and certainly not by which roster would you rather take into the playoffs. It's a testament to the depth of the Dodgers organization that it's been able to lead the NLW in spite of a division-worth of injuries. #Cubs

This is the standard Hoyer try-to-catch-lightning-in-a-bottle MO. #Cubs
The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social) reply parent
"A ton of research" would have raised all the red flags everyone is aware of now. Other teams, like the Phillies, plugged their holes and are ready to go deep in October. The #Cubs & Hoyer didn't, largely because they overvalue their system and their own ability to develop MLB-capable players.
The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social)
Hoyer's TD pitching pickups are just killing it for the #Cubs. Of course, only 1 run doesn't win many games, but still....
The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social)
Hoyer's big TD acquisition's contribution to a #Cubs WS run this season is 2 IP, for $3M. He's a FA, so expect Jed to pay him another $5M to rehab, assuming Tom is dumb enough to keep letting him waste his money.
The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social) reply parent
If Hoyer remains POBO, then the message is clear that the only thing that matters is the P&L statement. The #Cubs have been run like the Pirates, but w/ $200M+ to blow.

No designated hitter. Fire Rob Manfred.
The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social) reply parent

The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah - the surgery for his shoulder should only take a couple of hours. That drop in avg FB speed wasn't a huge red flag for Hoyer? This is the big TD deal for the postseason? And people wonder why the #Cubs have done nothing in almost 10 years.
The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social) reply parent
Good thing the #Cubs don't need any rotation help to make the postseason, much less go deep, or that the cost of 1 year of Tucker didn't make this an all-in season. But Hoyer's going to come in way under the cap, so everything's fine.
The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social) reply parent
He wore a Golden Sombrero on Saturday, too. He's trying way too hard to win these games all by himself, and he's getting carved up. #Cubs
The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social) reply parent
Good thing Hoyer didn't trade a ton for 1 year of Tucker and then not really do anything after that, including this as the big get at the TD. The #Cubs should have been all-in on this season. It'll be another early exit, assuming they even make it into October. Hoyer's killing this team.

Exactly. #Cubs had to be all-in this season. Instead, it's just been nibble-nibble-nibble. This has to be it for Hoyer.
The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social)
After trading a ton for 1 year of Tucker, the #Cubs should have been all-in on this season. Instead, all they've done is nibble and hope. This trade deadline nonsense must be the last straw for Hoyer. Even if they made the playoffs, this is no way to run a championship ballclub.

The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social) reply parent
Fair enough. And he did play at every stop. But, the #Cubs took Ed Howard 3 spots before PCA in the draft, and by the time they trade Baez for him (along with Trevor Williams), he was on everyone's radar, even injured. Nico and especially Steele are true Cubs prospects they drafted and developed.
The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social)
Why is Palencia pitching in a 6-0 game, especially with a day game tomorrow? #Cubs
The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm not sure it's fair to call PCA a "Cubs" prospect. This should be reserved for those the #Cubs either drafted or acquired long before an ability to perhaps play in the bigs was identified, and the Cubs were responsible for that player's development, not another club.

I'm a huge fan of Schwarber, especially for how he worked his way back to play in the postseason in 2016. But the truth is, he never showed the #Cubs enough to keep him.
The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social) reply parent
This isn't even remotely close to being accurate. He's a legend for specific HR events, not for season-long performance. He was let go after a shorted 2020 that strongly suggested marginal starter value was his peak. It's only been since last season that his value has stabilized higher.
The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social) reply parent
OMT - Even if MLB held the break w/ all 30 teams playing the same # of games at that same # each season, there's still the issue that none of those teams have played the same schedule or faced the same opponents under the same conditions. And this is true even for an entire season. That's baseball.
The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social) reply parent
But this issue is a function of sample size, not specific # of PAs. There's no meaningful difference between (and BA tells us little about a hitter) an OBP of .325 in 240 PAs and one in 260 PAs. And # of games is a poor metric for hitting; it misses place in the order and how a player is used.
The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social) reply parent
Moreover, whether it's "the month of April" or whatever arbitrary measure, everyone understands 30 teams aren't going to have played the same # of games, but no complains about that. The only time everything is equal is at the end of the season, and we all know this.
The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social) reply parent
Counting stats are more affected; rates aren't going to be that much different because of a handful of games. But this is a way-overblown reaction. Simply understanding that the break doesn't come at exactly the half-way point, or after the same # of games each season is all the context needed.

The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social) reply parent
A player capable of already crossing 2 bWAR, with half of the season still to go, who wouldn't start for an MLB team unless there's already an MVP-caliber player there, is a victim of a poor organization. No Tucker means Cam Smith plays. For another six years.
The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social) reply parent
Why not? Is there something about the Astros that unlocks his magic powers?

The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social) reply parent
That's great, but if you put Cam Smith in RF and Isaac Paredes at 3B, the #Cubs would have even more bWAR than the current lineup provides, and they'd have those players to do it again in the future.

Especially because the term for how fast something is moving, irrespective of where it's moving, is speed. And using a word that's incorrect just because it lets announcers make up yet another 'cool' abbreviation (that they then mispronounce) is pathetic.
The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social) reply parent
107 pitches in less than 5IP is no way to go about one's business. And wouldn't it be nice to have Paredes at 3B and Cam Smith for another six years? #Cubs
The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social) reply parent
Cam Smith and Isaac Paredes have put up 4.6 bWAR so far this season. Kyle Tucker has 3.3. And Paredes plays 3B, still a black hole for the #Cubs. For one season of Tucker. The only thing Hoyer nailed with the trade is his being out of a job after this season. What a waste of assets.
The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social)
The two offensive players Hoyer traded to the Astros, including the #Cubs #1 draft pick from last year, have put up 4.6 bWAR. Tucker, the return for one season, is at 3.3 bWAR. And Paredes plays 3B, which remains a black hole.
The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social) reply parent
Unless it's all three, they're not free.
The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social) reply parent
They need to put up a touchdown to be in any given game. The teams they'll face in October, assuming they even make the postseason, consistently beat them. So, "bad" is a stretch for the #Cubs, but "mediocre" is certainly fair.
The Grateful Cub (@thegratefulcub.bsky.social) reply parent
This is a no-brainer pickup for the #Cubs. If he were a P, Jed would already have cut a deal for yet another reclamation project. And he's got to still be a better hitter than anyone they have playing 3B.
