I said Fox AND voices *like* Rush (Limbaugh, primarily on radio). Media outlets don't invent the ideology, they amplify it. But Fox was the first to mainstream the devotion of an entire TV network to yellow journalism serving a partisan agenda. They sued TWC in 1996 to gain access for their model. 🤷♂️
But the main point is that Fox News was the first widely adopted TV network to accuse all the other mainstream outlets of deliberately lying for political purposes. Sure, political rags have been doing the same since the colonies, but Fox, and mouths like Rush, mainstreamed permanent outrage for $.
Big difference between television and everything else in journalism. Harvest of Shame was the closest thing to Watergate that TV news would ever produce. And boy did it piss a lot of people off. We've been playing the same corporate game for decades. Fox News put cognitive dissonance on steroids.
The media spent zero time trying to convince people that the news was true, people assumed it was. The agenda was "Americana," pro business and conservative. Fox News ended all that by labeling right wing extremism as "Fair and Balanced." Corporate double-speak slogan out of the box. And it worked!
