Which is all that was ultimately announced today isn't it? They're not building shit, just putting stuff in someone else's DC. You know, usually when I see people claim work they didn't do it's when they're fucked and trying to hide it. Hooton said Luxon is too stupid for the job and he was right.

what I want to know is what the fuck is this. they appear to claim an NZ region when they don't have one? we'd use an NZ region for data location regulations/reasons, so it actually fuckin matters. but i note we haven't enabled it on our account (we mainly use sydney) so maybe we knew it was bogus

Absolutely wild to have appointed a director who can't have access to certain board documents, must receive a separate vetted board agenda pack and can't be present for some board discussions. And his company's donation to NZ First has, apparently, nothing to do with his appointment.

This is the fundamental thing that people who spout on about private enterprise being more efficient ignore: the need to extract profit is a fundamental, built-in, inefficiency. All else being equal public sector can operate _more efficiently_. The only problem usually is management quality.

Friday afternoon school run in my bike-enabled burb: a dad (with baby on the back) and two kids on bikes, trundling homeward down our recently rebuilt main street via the dedicated bike paths. A nice, normal, and neighbourly scene. It’s just so weird that this could be seen as in any way political.🤷

Point Chevalier Road, on a Friday afternoon: a family using the new bike path (off road, separated from the footpath) to get home from school: dad, with baby on the back, and two young kids each on their own bike. They’re riding past one of the local cafes, which has tables out the front, and there’s still space for parking on the road. Just beyond the parked car you can see a glimpse of the bus shelter. And in the foreground, a freshly planted pōhutukawa tree and ground cover, between the footpath and the bike path. Photo is taken from a raised pedestrian crossing that provides access to the shops and bus stop on the other side of the road. State of the art. Model villlage.

This week's comic, inspired by a study showing that AI summaries on top of search results are dramatically cutting traffic to websites.

WEB'S END IN THE BEGINNING, THERE WERE WEBSITES. YOU VISITED THEM AND IT WAS FUN. Computer screen: Jill's Homepage LINKS AND STUMBLEUPON HELPED YOU FIND NEW ONES. Computer screen: Cheese Art GOOGLE ACTUALLY WORKED AND SENT YOU TO SITES BUILT WITH CARE BY REAL PEOPLE. Computer screen: Lovable Expert THEN CAME SOCIAL MEDIA, AND ITS ALGORITHMS DETERMINED WHAT YOU CLICKED. Computer screen: Facebook THEN AGGREGATOR SITES TOOK OFF. Computer screen: CRAP FROM AROUND THE WEB THEN SOCIAL MEDIA COMPANIES TRIED TO KEEP US FROM EVER LEAVING… AND WE DIDN'T. Woman on phone: SCROLL SCROLL SCROLL THEN AI BEGAN GENERATING SUMMARIES SO YOU DIDN'T NEED TO CLICK THROUGH TO A SITE ANYMORE. Computer screen: MONOPOSEARCH Summary SOON... THE AI CHATBOT BECOMES THE ONLY SOURCE OF INFORMATION AND REAL PUBLICATIONS DISAPPEAR. Woman speaking to phone: CHATBOT, WHAT IS A WEBSITE? UNTIL ONE DAY, PEOPLE WALK AWAY AND BUILD SOMETHING NEW. Walz says Harris "would have been a fantastic president... we wouldn't wake up every day to a bunch of shit on TV. We would wake up to an adult w/ compassion & dignity doing the work, not a manchild crying about whatever is wrong with him. May his fat ankles find something today. Petty as hell."

In no other conflict would an event like this be excused, but this keeps happening without consequence. It's so far beyond acceptable that it's just impossible to even contextualise anymore. This report is strong, direct and important. youtu.be/LM21IDo-3Eo

Turns out studying philosophy is actually valuable. Philosophy majors don’t just argue well, they actually become better thinkers and do better on tests. Data from 600k students shows they outscore every other major on reasoning, curiosity and open-mindedness.

Tony Schwartz was very public about the extreme effort it took working with such a manbaby and deep regret he has over writing Art of the Deal. What's clear is that Trump was always hopeless, it's not just since he's started developing age related stuff. www.npr.org/2016/07/21/4...

Great article from Lucianne Tonti ⤵️ "In addition to parental leave, Norway’s welfare system provides a long list of significantly more substantial perks, including free university and healthcare, and subsidised childcare (kindergarten is capped at $180 a month; in Aus it costs $70 to $180 a day)."

I will update my view, I accept that individual keytarists can be very cool while still thinking the keytar itself is profoundly and permanently uncool. Some musicians are just like that. It doesn't matter what they play.

Or perhaps the term is only relevant on a certain timeline and it gets a bit incoherent to try to push it further, like yeah if you want a bit of perspective the planet used to be a dust cloud but that doesn't mean regional cultures don't have meaningful local connections.

Not true, keytars suck, keep it on the stand. But if my mate Paul was anything to go by, boys who can play piano get girls like _absolute crazy_ in their mid teens, if they have any social skills at all. He was practically beating them off with a stick and they were just beating him off.

a long, fluffy, cream-colored creature stands halfway on gray tile and bright green astroturf. he's looking up at us with dark brown eyes. his snoot is black and so is the fur around his eyes and mouth. his tail is skinny and curled. admittedly, he may actually be an afghan hound, but he looks just like a cousin of Snuffleupagus to us.

The nitrate water is slowly migrating under the gravel of the plains and will eventually reach the large urban aquifers that supply Christchurch whereupon infrastructure hell will break loose. Because we don’t do anything in this country in advance, just reactive response once it’s too late to stop.
