My theory on this is that many on the right (fueled by RW media) invested a lot in the idea that the gov was finally enacting the oppression they’d been predicting. When it turned out that it was going to end peacefully and not in a war, they had to believe the solution was also somehow oppression.

Part of the reason we chose to do a race rather than some other kind of fundraiser is exposure within the community. We’re at the beginning stages of our overall capital campaign, and there are a ton of people here who have no idea the library needs to be replaced or that we’re raising money for it.

This is partly what happens when students (and parents and admin and a whole host of others) don’t realize what the role of instructor as mentor is. They don’t want people to critique their work, they want a youth pastor / cheerleader. They don’t get that, as you say, the critique IS the mentoring.

I think it's now possible to make a poli-sci course that equips one for modern political analysis better than most classic theory and has a syllabus sourced entirely from random internet posts. Text 1. Wilhoit's Law, born as part of a 2018 blog comment crookedtimber.org/2018/03/21/l...

There is no such thing as liberalism — or progressivism, etc. There is only conservatism. No other political philosophy actually exists; by the political analogue of Gresham’s Law, conservatism has driven every other idea out of circulation. There might be, and should be, anti-conservatism; but it does not yet exist. What would it be? In order to answer that question, it is necessary and sufficient to characterize conservatism. Fortunately, this can be done very concisely. Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protectes but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect. There is nothing more or else to it, and there never has been, in any place or time. For millenia, conservatism had no name, because no other model of polity had ever been proposed. “The king can do no wrong.” In practice, this immunity was always extended to the king’s friends, however fungible a group they might have been. Today, we still have the king’s friends even where there is no king (dictator, etc.). Another way to look at this is that the king is a faction, rather than an individual. As the core proposition of conservatism is indefensible if stated baldly, it has always been surrounded by an elaborate backwash of pseudophilosophy, amounting over time to millions of pages. All such is axiomatically dishonest and undeserving of serious scrutiny. Today, the accelerating de-education of humanity has reached a point where the market for pseudophilosophy is vanishing; it is, as The Kids Say These Days, tl;dr . All that is left is the core proposition itself — backed up, no longer by misdirection and sophistry, but by violence. So this tells us what anti-conservatism must be: the proposition that the law cannot protect anyone unless it binds everyone, and cannot bind anyone unless it protects everyone. Then the appearance arises that the task is to map “liberalism”, or “progressivism”, or “socialism”, or whateverthefuckkindofstupidnoise-ism, onto the core proposition of anti-conservatism. No, it a’n’t. The task is to throw all those things on the exact same burn pile as the collected works of all the apologists for conservatism, and start fresh. The core proposition of anti-conservatism requires no supplementation and no exegesis. It is as sufficient as it is necessary. What you see is what you get: The law cannot protect anyone unless it binds everyone; and it cannot bind anyone unless it protects everyone.

Been on the job two days and already secured $1000 in sponsorships, so it can’t be too bad!

I got tapped to help plan a 5k for my local Friends of the Libraries to raise money for a new library building! I have no idea what I’m doing, but I’m gonna do it the best I possibly can!

Just texted my wife, “Have you been following the whole MechaHitler thing,” which is just such a wild sentence to say.

It feels like maybe some people should learn an important lesson from the fact that when you feed an AI with supposedly pure ideas from their political POV, it INSTANTLY goes full Nazi and declares itself “MechaHitler.” Will they? Of course not.

Not sure that’s quite right. We had a major tornado outbreak several years ago that killed some people and destroyed a huge chunk of the town. They’re thinking ideologically, not rationally.

Except I’m the one who lives here, grew up here, knows them, talks to them, etc. Honestly, to simply dismiss them as some sort of Snidely Whiplash caricature is WAY more naive.

It’s misguided and based on ideological beliefs and not rational thought, but it’s not out of hatred for their kids.

I honestly don’t think this is true, at least not for most. They want their kids to learn so they can have a better life, and you can’t learn if you aren’t in school. They also worry that shutting schools down at the slightest provocation will prime them to give up when things are at all dangerous.

People in my hometown are like this and it drives me nuts. They get so mad when they dismiss school because of a threat of tornado if no tornado comes. Like, wouldn’t you rather err on the side of caution than err on the side of dead kids?

Yep, been noodling it for a while. If nothing else, it could be a useful source for future historians (if I can nail the archiving/accession).

Anyone with practical experience running such a project on a shoestring budget?

I’ve been working on possibly starting a small oral history project focused on collecting stories (a la Story Corps) from a cross-section of people living in my community. It would be a lot of work for probably very little payoff (at least in the short term), but I think it could be interesting.

The peach ice cream was a rousing success, especially paired with the mother-in-law’s chess bars!

America is beautiful, contradictory, unfinished. I am proud of our country even as we constantly strive to make it better, to protect and deepen our democracy, to fulfill its promise for each and every person who calls it home. Happy Independence Day. No Kings in America.
