I mean that’s a huge problem with curriculum design — because it needs to be universal they preset correct answers and even program in AI grading. But real literacy is not about correct answers it’s about recognizing patterns and themes

I think a qualitative study would show that it’s a difference of kind, not degree. My 11-13yo could hold a conversation about a text or media item perfectly well but they don’t express it well in the ways that are being asked.
So my perspective on this is as someone who is interested in SEL as a researcher and then also taught 6&7 grade English for a year. In terms of their reading comprehension, the *test scores* are very low but I don’t think their actual comp is as low as data suggests. I think the data is bad.

I guess I might go as far as to say that what Em is describing as fan studies here is a bit of a misnomer bc most of us aren’t interested in making broad statements about an entire fandom. That would be more audience studies at least as a Henry Jenkins adviser that’s how I’d put it.
See that’s the thing is I come from a black feminist and an ethnographic perspective where the goal is to embrace and push into the bias, not to attempt objectivity which is ultimately a doomed project. IMHO fandom studies can use science but it’s not science. It’s cultural studies.
