Hundreds of these yellow hornworms out around Catalina State Park in Tucson munching on the new growth after the recent rains. These turn into super cool hummingbird moths that are super pollinators.

Whoa that weird shrieking / noise at the beginning and end is from whatever Bluesky does to normalize audio volume in uploaded videos. Weird.

The sand can get hot yes, especially late afternoons. Your feet get used to it after spending a lot of time barefoot

This is on the east side of Hawaii Island (the Big Island) and Hana is on Maui. There is an awesome black sand beach near Hana too. Black sand beaches are formed when molten lava flows directly into the ocean and conditions are š. The lava shatters like glass and wave action smoothes it all out.

When the deer jumped up and ran off its feet landed near a rattlesnake that was coiled up in the brush. It started rattling and raised up, surprised by the deer. It then spotted me and shifted its focus. If I hadnāt have scared up a deer I would have stepped right on the snake. Funny how things work

I was hiking at the north side of Catalina State Park near Tucson today. I spotted a desert tortoise and ducked under some trees at the edge of a wash to go see it. Well under the tree a small whitetail deer was sleeping and we both terrified each other when it woke up and bounded off down the wash.

More Modern Sounds Pluto. Applying CV to the strike input for Voice 2 causes the delay/ reverb to reset in a very agreeable way. There is a ton going on in the low end of this recording. #synthsky #modular #eurorack

The way I tell the difference in non-obvious cases is by the beak. The pyrrhuloxia beak is more blunt if thatās the right description. Iām no expert, and have a good history of being incorrect as some of my posts show. Ha!

An ocotillo stem covered with leaves after the recent bit of rain that we had. The leaves sprout out from the base of the spines (which are just modified leaves). And this added surface area boosts photosynthesis and a growth cycle. depending on rain the ocotillo may leaf 4-5 times a year.

I drove along the San Pedro River between San Manuel and Pomerene, AZ on Saturday and flew my drone along these cliffs. Apparently they are part of the Quiburis Formation, and are a mixture of silt, sand and tuff that is part of an old lake bed (Miocene / Pliocene). They are dramatic!

Everything is looking a little happier out there and there are a lot of flowers blooming and a lot of the ocotillo has leafed out. We have had an anemic monsoon - I hope we get more rain.

Desert tortoise I spotted near Tucson, AZ yesterday. I see this one pretty often while hiking. Iām assuming itās the same? I know where itās hidey hole is and see a tortoise in the same general area quite a bit. Spotting is reliable several days after a rain.

Tucson sunset but looking to the northeast. During the summer / monsoon the low sun illuminates the storm clouds above the Catalina mountains and we get sunsets like this a lot.

Yes! I have 4 fountains around my house that the birds frequent and I also filled a small tray with water and put it out there on the loggia. I see sooo many kinds of birds at the fountains and they are also critical for bees and bats.
