We had a problem like that at one of the schools I worked at many years ago. Turned out a few of the modems got put on the "when the bells ring" circuits. Fine during the day when people would turn em back on... less useful when the 330 bell rang and everyone went home without reupping the modems.

Not a punk. Strictly establishment, if the statement about Trump is anything to go by.

Pity they can't just return it to the mangroves and seagrass, both of which grew there in the silty environment forever, and supported a huge ecosystem.

Always my reaction too. Poor bastards, wish we could take them all in.

I really know nothing about it other than "Americans continue to shoot each other, then blame people they don't like, news at 11". Not certain who this particular gunshot death is, other than apparently his name is similar enough to a star trek character that it keeps reappearing in my feed.

The korea one was in the news here in Oz. No idea about the other.

Thankyou for the offer. I fear that looks like it is neither live, nor accessible on the TV (youtube has a TV app) so I expect it will be inconvenient to watch on a relatively tiny laptop screen. I will point it out to my partner though, it might amuse him.
Thisfox (@thisfoxhere.bsky.social) reply parent
...Well, that was a splat. Oh well!
Thisfox (@thisfoxhere.bsky.social) reply parent
That would apparently require a cable company. The in-Japanese version we found is fine, it has a man explaining all the wrestling moves (in Japanese) lots of replays, and the screen isn't obscured by too many adverts. Our favourite Ukrainian is coming on soon, both looking forward to that!
Thisfox (@thisfoxhere.bsky.social) reply parent
Youtube. It's live on youtube.
Thisfox (@thisfoxhere.bsky.social)
We found we could watch the #sumo with english commentary. But the commentary did nothing, just them chatting cheerfully about the world championship and a friend called goose, adding nothing to the story we are actually watching on the screen. So it's back to incomprehensible Japanese. #nagoyabasho
Thisfox (@thisfoxhere.bsky.social)
Double points for knocking over the referee and the opponent! #sumo
Thisfox (@thisfoxhere.bsky.social) reply parent
Watching it live right now from Australia, a Sunday arvo here. No idea what time it is in the US though.

Sitting about on a sunny Sunday afternoon watching live Japanese sumo on the TV and considering what an amazing world we live in that all this is possible.

Aren't those wonders of the world, rather than monuments?
Thisfox (@thisfoxhere.bsky.social) reply parent
Huh. Like Corner Country where NSW and Queensland meet. Interesting.
Thisfox (@thisfoxhere.bsky.social) reply parent
In my country, four corners is a news show on public broadcast. Good, but not really a monument. What is your four corners?
Thisfox (@thisfoxhere.bsky.social) reply parent
I could go on and on, such as Mathew Flinders, and his cat Trim, or Lady Macquaries Chair, or even the Australian War Memorial, or whatever. I want to know why you asked though?
Thisfox (@thisfoxhere.bsky.social) reply parent
1. The fighter plane in my parents home town. 2. Little Plains Memorial Hall. 3. The monument to the coal mine disaster & the people who died in it in Stockton, and the monument for the people who died trying to rescue them. 4. The dog on the Tuckerbox in Gunnedah. 5. The comfort women statue.

yeah, it's just been an eye opener for a non-American to see their take on positives through these comments. It's interesting, really interesting.
Thisfox (@thisfoxhere.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah nah, in Australia, and looking for no-backlight epaper, with lights and stuff I may as well just read books on my phone or laptop. the Nook, far as I am aware, is an offbrand ipad, and I don't need to use a tablet. Or are the colour ebooks actually just tablet screens again?
Thisfox (@thisfoxhere.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh, you already are to the rest of the world, don't worry. I am reading through this list sort of mystified by the extremely Amerigocentric nature of a majority of the boasts...

I expect they think "hobby" is a side hustle. When I show people my hobby here, they ask what colours I choose and who I learnt from. When I show people my hobby in the US, they ask how much money it makes me.

We had the SETI screensaver. I remember some friends installing the SETI screensaver on every uni, business and school computer they could find. Fun to watch on a b&w screen. My students, needless to say, have no idea what a screensaver is, and say I have a "fancy lockscreen" on my machine.

Thisfox (@thisfoxhere.bsky.social) reply parent
I think those examples more emphasise the rule though. No one was hurt in the WA thing, and we still talk about it a lot a year later. Meanwhile the US has had at least several a week, injuries & deaths... and they all blur together. Similar story with the stabbings.
Thisfox (@thisfoxhere.bsky.social) reply parent
I am so sorry you went through that, and glad you are in a safer space now. Our yr12s are playing a splash game with waterpistols for the final few weeks. "A just got shot by B, C is next" comments in class, etc & watergun fights in the staff carpark. Guessing this is not a popular game in the US.

A gunman? Here? In Sydney? ...I find that a trifle hard to believe. The Toaster unexpectedly coming down (they put it up fast enough!), or a crowd of flashmobbers, sure, but honestly a gunman seems breathtakingly unlikely in the Emerald City.

The driverless mode isn't legal here. But I expect for some wannabe not-driving drivers it will take an actual accident to find that out.
Thisfox (@thisfoxhere.bsky.social) reply parent
I fail to see how that would be considered humane, or how it could be a permanent solution, as hopefully the sink also moves a lot of water? I figure the people with the grating ideas are being more long-term about this.

They're terrified that the children will get an education, and thus not vote for them when they grow up. They want them uneducated, poor, pregnant, desperate, and voting conservative.
Thisfox (@thisfoxhere.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah. It can't be easy being her kids, even if they did want to end up with their dad, which they apparently didn't. It's tough enough being a teenager without all that hanging over your family. I hope they can find some safe calm somewhere.

Standard rock salt alone wouldn't change the melting temperature all that much, so I am not surprised it isn't just salt any more. It always seems such an incredibly environmentally destructive option, to our eyes, but I realise it is different when you are living with it.
Thisfox (@thisfoxhere.bsky.social) reply parent
The fact that they say SALT trucks makes me think they are making a pun about water ice, or using an A.I. prompted response. Don't yanks put salt on their roads, to melt some of the snow? There are a lot of types of trucks, after all. Why else specifically the salt ones?
Thisfox (@thisfoxhere.bsky.social) reply parent

It seems so simple for someone or something to read "country" on a parcel. They make us write addresses in such a formal manner! There are also duplicate Sydneys and Melbournes around the world. It's not just small towns. But it seems such an annoying lack of literacy skills somewhere in between!

Oh yes, and I am not judging the lass at all, as you must understand: She had never seen a staircase do that, and did not realise that it could happen. She had not intentionally caused the accident. She was just a rural teen. And also yeah, I have fallen up and down nonmoving stairs.
Thisfox (@thisfoxhere.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah! It turns out one of the tricks is to teach people to stand on only one tread, not across two of them. And hold the sodding handrail.
Thisfox (@thisfoxhere.bsky.social) reply parent
When we went to Sydney on our HSC excursion, the only escalator in our home town was a "travelator". One of the (17-18yo) students entered the top of a 2storey escalator, had it turn "unexpectedly" into stairs, and fell all the way to the bottom, knocking people down all the way. 3 hospitalisations.

The avocado-coloured loo, sink and bath can actually look quite good, restrained and refined, even now, in a modern bathroom. At least compared to the pink sets from the same period. It's the garish patterned yellow tiles that make this look so unfortunate, not the concept of green.

...I mean, that sounds like peoples front gardens to me. But yeah, we get golden orb webs everywhere outdoors (they don't tend to want to go indoors) all year round. They can be incredibly beautiful with dew on them. Mornings, I have taken to walking around holding a stick upright in front of me.

Poor sods. That said, every time I visit a katmandu store, they are sold out if whatever I am looking for. Perhaps the trick is to actually start selling the things people want instead of all the junk that they have in stock?

...Why up? This is the assumption I don't understand. I would expect a dislodged/damaged metal bit or bits to fall down the hole and onto the ground, not up. But my theory is that someone messed with it, they used your pole for something, then put your pole back afterward.
Thisfox (@thisfoxhere.bsky.social) reply parent
The term "friend zone" always mystified me. There is no way I will ever sleep with a guy who isn't already a friend. They aren't a friend, they haven't a chance at hitting on me and will probably be delegated to "will never be a friend" if they try. So it never made sense.
Thisfox (@thisfoxhere.bsky.social) reply parent
"Cot" evidently means something else in your country? That looks like a small bed on milk crates, not a place a baby sleeps.

There used to be 300 rail-based apprenticeships in NSW alone every year.... Now we're told that there are three per year. Five on a good year. But it's good there's one glaziers apprenticeship, I'm sure that will improve the chances everyone can get a bloody window installed sometime...

Surviving. Scored 3 days at The Good School, currently. Which is nice. Even the classes that my boss the Casual Coordinator apologised for giving me are only kids who don't yet have much English, and are swimming through a sea of confusion as they settle into their new country. Lovely students.
Thisfox (@thisfoxhere.bsky.social) reply parent
Eh, doesn't bother me any. Pretty much done with that school. Trouble is, all the schools are doing it. Not the not-talking-to-me bit, the using A.I. to make worksheets bit. Which leads to more ignorant children.

Guess it's another symptom of US organisational breakdown, like their school shootings, homelessness & the like. The inability of their kids to autonomously make it to school & back. Here, bus companies drive many routes that aren't school-related, & they get a living wage, so it's different.

Wow that's early! Aussie schools run 9-3:30, but some city schools are starting to run as early as 8:30 or even 8:15, as their catchment is only a few km wide. For part of the year sunrise is 7ish, I cannot imagine doing an hour of dark classroom prep, and then roll call before sunup. Incredible.
