The Home Office's own (excellent) research summary says a) asylum seekers come to the UK primarily because of social networks/ties b) welfare and labour market policies are *not* a big "pull factor" c) safe routes would help freemovement.org.uk/wp-content/u...
Thomas I-G (@thomasig.bsky.social)
Using one photo already on your phone, what is the announcement tomorrow at 2?
Thomas I-G (@thomasig.bsky.social) reply parent
I just despair, itâs purely performative and will have negligible political impact for the government other than slowly eroding the reputation we somehow still maintain for world class HE - despite everything.
Thomas I-G (@thomasig.bsky.social) reply parent
What is this even meant to achieve? A very clear and loud âfuck youâ to international students who contribute massively to the economy and essentially subsidise a broken university funding system for domestic students.
Thomas I-G (@thomasig.bsky.social)
I guess between âGlobal Britainâ and âHostile Environmentâ is was the latter which has won out, for now at least.

Sorry, but wtaf? This does absolutely nothing but ensure that even more people, including children, have to use irregular crossings, and blocks people who even this government have recognised are refugees from being with their families. This is utterly sickening from Labour. 1/

Honestly, what are they doing. Theyâve lost the plot, and not only willingly ceded the narrative to Reform (on the one topic they are most virulent, vocal and united over), but are now doubling down on it because they are incapable of articulating any other argument, or even defending itself.
Thomas I-G (@thomasig.bsky.social) reply parent
This will mean nothing to the thousands of asylum claimants who rightly deserve a place in the UK, but this will do fuck all for Labourâs polling and even make the misconceptions and disinformation surrounding asylum seekers and the Laboir govt itself even worse. Shambolically cruel.
Thomas I-G (@thomasig.bsky.social)
You canât claim to be âfixing the asylum systemâ by orderly means and then pull a grotesque, cruel, entirely counterproductive and inevitably fatal-for-some political stunt such as this.
Marie Le Conte (@youngvulgarian.marieleconte.com) reposted
is it only asylum seekers our Labour Prime Minister would object to living next to or would the sentiment apply to black and brown people in general? if merely the former, would he like to explain how he knows people he sees, say, in the street, actually are asylum seekers and not citizens?
Anand Menon (@anandmenon.bsky.social) reposted reply parent
It's beyond me why the PM doesn't want to put out this simple message. It's not hard. Hold a reception for prominent non-white British sportspeople, actors, etc to point out the kinds of well known and well liked people this kind of ugly nationalism is attacking. It's really not rocket science. 5/5
James Ball (@jamesrball.com) reposted
Banning refugees â people whose asylum claims have been processed by a hostile system and found to be legitimate â from bringing family members has one predictable and awful effect: instead of travelling alone, men will bring their wives and children on small boats, and some will drown.
Thomas I-G (@thomasig.bsky.social) reply parent
Understanding full well that itâs a small but vocal minority of ignorant racists, the sight of each bridge of the M4 in emblazoned with flags (and Welsh/British flags in Wales), knowing full well the message is some form of white nationalism, was pretty fucking depressing.
Thomas I-G (@thomasig.bsky.social)
Passed an asylum hotel which was targeted by a small group on the weekend, and for a slight uplift in humanity, the words ârefugees welcomeâ and âEnglish decency, love your neighbourâ has been written on the graffitiâd English flags.

Not to hyperbolise - risk of GPS jamming to bringing down an aircraft is extremely low, and would require multitude of other factors and/or failures; the risk of a rusty oil tanker, dragging its anchor 100s of KMs to cut undersea cables becoming a huge ecological/economic disaster is far more real.
Thomas I-G (@thomasig.bsky.social) reply parent
Their entire doctrine, arguably the largest sabotage operation in Europe since the height of the Cold War, is aimed at disrupting, provoking and inconveniencing. Be it underwater cable cutting, arson, espionage, GPS jamming etc - the methods they are using risks spilling into something far graver.
Thomas I-G (@thomasig.bsky.social)
Weâve seen numerous instances of this throughout Eastern Europe, notably in flights operating near Kaliningrad. Unclear whether UVdL was deliberately targeted here, but itâs yet another example of Russiaâs wreckless sabotage operations in Europe.

Even if they didnât engage with this, itâs not an sustainable strategy when vocal bad actors, the opposition and swathes of media is effectively using quasi-incitement with mis/disinformation to undermine govt and in some cases rule of law. You have to go on the attack at some point against that.

Unless itâs explicit threats of violence towards an individually named Minister, I genuinely think theyâd use this line again and again. No10 may think itâs choosing to not engage, but they need to explicitly say theyâre not engaging rather than labelling this talk as âpeopleâs frustrationsâ

This is, frankly, embarrassing and a very clear articulation of where Labour's cowardice has taken it. As Phillips gets at, Starmer has defended the ECHR previously, he's rightly dismissed reform as unserious, but Phillipson is now forced into pretending this doesn't contradict Cooper trying to.
