The Home Office's own (excellent) research summary says a) asylum seekers come to the UK primarily because of social networks/ties b) welfare and labour market policies are *not* a big "pull factor" c) safe routes would help freemovement.org.uk/wp-content/u...

nce 2017, the number of asylum applications in the UK has been increasing, by 2019 returning to levels seen during 2015-16 although the UK was relatively little affected by the European 'migration crisis’. This recent increase is likely due in part to movement to the UK by those already in Europe. • In 2019, at least 1 in 6 asylum applicants to the UK had made a prior application in a European country. • However, only a small portion of secondary movement across Europe is to the UK – in 2019, the UK produced just 6% of Eurodac hits relating to prior applications elsewhere in Europe. • While many entering the UK may travel through France, most top nationalities applying for asylum in the UK do not apply in France in large numbers (with the exception of Sudanese, Afghan and Albanian applicants). Social networks, shared languages and diasporas motivate asylum seekers to reach certain destination countries • Social networks aid migrant integration to society, acting as facilitators of information relating to life in the destination country. They are considered trusted sources and are likely to influence migration journeys more than information from formal institutions. • The presence of diaspora communities can motivate migrants to reach certain destination countries. The proportion of diasporas in the EU+ residing in the UK is correlated with the proportion of asylum applications across the EU+ made in the UK (see slide 21). Armed conflict, human rights abuses, poverty, political & economic instability and violence are factors that forcibly displace migrants • The majority (57%) of individuals escaping persecution are internally displaced within their own countries and most refugees displaced abroad stay within their region of displacement, living in countries neighbouring their countries of origin 1 2 . • Of the number of asylum seekers that reach Europe, only a small percentage claim asylum in the UK. In 2019, the UK received 6% of total EU+ asylum applications. • A …

I just despair, it’s purely performative and will have negligible political impact for the government other than slowly eroding the reputation we somehow still maintain for world class HE - despite everything.

Honestly, what are they doing. They’ve lost the plot, and not only willingly ceded the narrative to Reform (on the one topic they are most virulent, vocal and united over), but are now doubling down on it because they are incapable of articulating any other argument, or even defending itself.

This will mean nothing to the thousands of asylum claimants who rightly deserve a place in the UK, but this will do fuck all for Labour’s polling and even make the misconceptions and disinformation surrounding asylum seekers and the Laboir govt itself even worse. Shambolically cruel.

It's beyond me why the PM doesn't want to put out this simple message. It's not hard. Hold a reception for prominent non-white British sportspeople, actors, etc to point out the kinds of well known and well liked people this kind of ugly nationalism is attacking. It's really not rocket science. 5/5

Banning refugees – people whose asylum claims have been processed by a hostile system and found to be legitimate – from bringing family members has one predictable and awful effect: instead of travelling alone, men will bring their wives and children on small boats, and some will drown.

Not to hyperbolise - risk of GPS jamming to bringing down an aircraft is extremely low, and would require multitude of other factors and/or failures; the risk of a rusty oil tanker, dragging its anchor 100s of KMs to cut undersea cables becoming a huge ecological/economic disaster is far more real.

Their entire doctrine, arguably the largest sabotage operation in Europe since the height of the Cold War, is aimed at disrupting, provoking and inconveniencing. Be it underwater cable cutting, arson, espionage, GPS jamming etc - the methods they are using risks spilling into something far graver.

Even if they didn’t engage with this, it’s not an sustainable strategy when vocal bad actors, the opposition and swathes of media is effectively using quasi-incitement with mis/disinformation to undermine govt and in some cases rule of law. You have to go on the attack at some point against that.

Bears repeating that Lowe's position on remigration is to the right of the BNP in the 2000s. And the Telegraph is giving him softball interviews.

In some ways yes (anti-Ukraine, UK obsessed etc) but also the stranglehold Trump has over Congress would evaporate over night given how tight it is - I’d suspect that would dominate any agenda he has for the foreseeable.
