It’s god damn criminal how everyone pretends 7 and 10 are better than 12. Like the weakest part of 12 is vaan and even the writers knew it because every scene he’s in has every party member look at him like ā€œwhy is the child talking?ā€

Which is all to say that a lot of the issue boils down to the money involved, and in the want/need to recoup that money, for commercial products, while mods fall on the creator-intention sliding scale instead. Patches are "canon" without often being commercial (in themselves), which shows contrast.

Patches often being free means that it removes some of the capitalistic side of the discussion, which means that you're usually not dealing with suits' involvement. So the "cheap cash in" isn't often a part of the equation, though the aforementioned Super Bounce patch/debacle is a counterpoint

both preservation and in historical context. I know speedrunning communities sometimes preserve patches, but they may also ban versions if application of them gets in the way (staying on a specific patch, or getting to a non-origin patch, may be practically impossible, for instance).

And there's developer intention in both sides, so the question of "who is it for" is kinda addressed here; sometimes it's suits, sometimes it's devs, sometimes it's the fans. But with patches, these eras and versions aren't as discrete as xpacks or remasters, which is a factor involved in -

Patches the remove fun bugs or balance patches that change your main character are both transformative, and it being a *change* is interesting as context for both of them. This is part of living games, especially. Some of these even extend to the cultural memory (Halo 2 Super Bounce).

There's been some discussion re: remakes/remasters, and I've not seen many people relate it to patches and xpacks and such, which I feel is another thread in the same vein, and I think I sorted out why they aren't included:

Hey Firefox users.

Screenshot from a Tumblr post by ralfmaximus: Mozilla, in its finite wisdom, embedded LLM bots into recent versions of Firefox for the vitally-important purpose of… naming tab groups. Now, some users are noticing CPU and power usage spikes caused by a background process called Inference. Ugh. Reminder again for Firefox users to visit your about:config page, search for the browser.ml.chat.enabled key, and set that to false: If yours says true then double-click it until it reads false. Doing that turns off the AI chatbot features in Firefox, but also the stupid new LLM tab-naming feature that's rolling out

To wit: an "unskilled" artist can still make art out of ideas and experience, while an AI 'artist' is either insecure or not so social as to recruit help. I'm working on a book; dreams are done as graphic pages. I sent this to my crew. It was praised for effort/intent, as placeholder.

A quickly drawn ballpoint comic/storyboard showing a man in a red cloak and inhuman features, trailing blood as he walks, approaching a town and disquieting the locals before his mouth floats up and off of his face and dark smoke begins to issue from his cloak. The comic is unfinished, having been used to give another artist a starting point and reference

"Trust your Audience" is a thing that's really hard for creation-by-census works designed to appeal to mass markets... And man, people just *do not* have media literacy because of it, which in turn means they'd struggle with those movies. The whole "The Boys" thing shows that in spades...

Not just that but: painting a positive image of himself, getting people involved in politics more generally, making himself relatable, getting people involved with each other and their community… I mean, Mamdani is very obviously sincere, but even cynical fucks should see how functional that is

This is where the "participation trophy parents" kinda comes in; the parents failed, and the kid failed but the parent wants credit for making their kid do the thing and "supporting" them in it the way their parents didn't. If not trophy, they get angry at the kid, because it's a reflection of them

But this means that failures are often compounded, and that missed opportunities are often forced as requirement (think Sports Dads who make their kid do sports).

So, when they grow up with parental approval, they attribute it as success, and want to pass that 'success' on to their children, so they carefully emulate the things that shaped them, correcting only the places where their own rebellion made them more approved of.

This is actually has a reason! Authoritarian raising tactics center the Parent (and Approved Authoritiesā„¢) as the only source of 'correct' knowledge and ideas, by elevating the parent as superior to the child, and instilling a strict hierarchy of superiority/subservience.

I'm now suddenly curious if different languages, being culturally rooted in different views of sex, might make conversations about sex easier to have for certain bilingual folk. That's a really neat concept I have zero ability to research -_- My response is "By informing yourself, first?"

Perfect parallel. Cuban is such a fuckin' weirdo... like, that's such a fucking non-sequitur. Does he not get that there's a huge lack of causality for his bizarre ass theory? Does he think that would actually function? Or is he just doing the "What would you do for a Klon… midterm election?"

My favorite example, though, is the original King's Field, which looks like donkey shit but still has some excellent environmental storytelling and atmospheric moments.

Graphical fidelity and art direction are completely disconnected as concepts. Wind Waker was my personal turning point in being completely unable to ignore that.

In all these cases, the "world" we have is our playground, and we just introduce new folks into it to keep it new. Building the playground isn't a thing everyone does (or can do), so it looks different for everyone. But very few people can keep making "one thing" forever

There's also Jeph Jacques, who talks about how he's turned tact a few times because he finds something that strikes him; his comic was originally about indie music and relationships and then he really liked the robots so he focused on that because it was more fun!

As a long-form DM, I have a world I've been playing in since i was 6, DMing for my parents when I started. But it has tons of things that I've added on and added in as I got older and got more media and references and mechanics under my belt.

Listening to Toriyama talk about his 'side' projects letting him breathe life into Dragon Ball with new perspectives might be a thing; his work on Dragon Quest (And Chrono Trigger especially) gave him a lot of places where he wasn't the center, and he found it enriching (if taxing as ever).

This used to be an interesting conversation based on medium of conversation! IMs were designed for the former, but texts and emails and PMs were the latter. There's no instant-response mediums anymore, really, unless you're already chatting in a room (or know someone, but…)

That's why it's my line, specifically. Like, if someone doesn't agree with that for at least *some* reason (anti-corp, anti-corruption, anti-monopoly, or hell, even punitive measures for harm!) we probably aren't going to agree on the rest of the plan.

This was halfway my thought: Given that this is Swordscomic we're talking about, this sounds a *lot* like "Conversations within Elsydeon"-style stuff. And I adore that on both levels.
