Itās god damn criminal how everyone pretends 7 and 10 are better than 12. Like the weakest part of 12 is vaan and even the writers knew it because every scene heās in has every party member look at him like āwhy is the child talking?ā

Which is all to say that a lot of the issue boils down to the money involved, and in the want/need to recoup that money, for commercial products, while mods fall on the creator-intention sliding scale instead. Patches are "canon" without often being commercial (in themselves), which shows contrast.
Thundal Archsys (@thundalarchsys.bsky.social) reply parent
Patches often being free means that it removes some of the capitalistic side of the discussion, which means that you're usually not dealing with suits' involvement. So the "cheap cash in" isn't often a part of the equation, though the aforementioned Super Bounce patch/debacle is a counterpoint
Thundal Archsys (@thundalarchsys.bsky.social) reply parent
both preservation and in historical context. I know speedrunning communities sometimes preserve patches, but they may also ban versions if application of them gets in the way (staying on a specific patch, or getting to a non-origin patch, may be practically impossible, for instance).
Thundal Archsys (@thundalarchsys.bsky.social) reply parent
And there's developer intention in both sides, so the question of "who is it for" is kinda addressed here; sometimes it's suits, sometimes it's devs, sometimes it's the fans. But with patches, these eras and versions aren't as discrete as xpacks or remasters, which is a factor involved in -
Thundal Archsys (@thundalarchsys.bsky.social) reply parent
Patches the remove fun bugs or balance patches that change your main character are both transformative, and it being a *change* is interesting as context for both of them. This is part of living games, especially. Some of these even extend to the cultural memory (Halo 2 Super Bounce).
Thundal Archsys (@thundalarchsys.bsky.social)
There's been some discussion re: remakes/remasters, and I've not seen many people relate it to patches and xpacks and such, which I feel is another thread in the same vein, and I think I sorted out why they aren't included:

Thundal Archsys (@thundalarchsys.bsky.social) reply parent
To wit: an "unskilled" artist can still make art out of ideas and experience, while an AI 'artist' is either insecure or not so social as to recruit help. I'm working on a book; dreams are done as graphic pages. I sent this to my crew. It was praised for effort/intent, as placeholder.
Thundal Archsys (@thundalarchsys.bsky.social) reply parent
Eh; I think those are arguments on different semantic definitions. Graphical skill and artistic skill are unrelated: hyperbole and a half is excellent art despite looking like it does. The lack of artist in the ai art, comparing the two, is what's being mocked.

This is where the "participation trophy parents" kinda comes in; the parents failed, and the kid failed but the parent wants credit for making their kid do the thing and "supporting" them in it the way their parents didn't. If not trophy, they get angry at the kid, because it's a reflection of them
Thundal Archsys (@thundalarchsys.bsky.social) reply parent
