I grew up with adults who had "Question Authority" bumper stickers on their cars.
About a decade ago, young audience members in my talks started asking me about "obedience" as a spiritual practice. I remember being flummoxed. Once I said to a questioner, "You're like 22. Why are you even thinking about obedience?"
In 1980, I went to a wedding where the couple played Keith Green's "To Obey is Better Than Sacrifice" as their song. Pretty much the entire congregation rolled our collective eyes and thought WTF. Who's obeying who? Is she supposed to obey him? (FYI: They're divorced. It was ugly.)
It has something to do with obedience. Honestly, as evangelical teens in the 1970s, we weren't terribly obedient. We were a surprisingly critical and counter-cultural group. We really were about questioning authority and rule-breaking for Jesus.
I made the mistake of watching season 2 of "Shiny Happy People" today. And now I can't stop thinking about the years of transition from 70s Jesus-people evangelicalism into the 80s of authoritarian evangelicalism. How very easy and subtle it was. And how it changed America.
