It's seeming likelier and likelier that AI really could eliminate a lot of jobs very soon. Just not in the way boosters have suggested. www.theatlantic.com/economy/arch...

Just How Bad Would an AI Bubble Be? The entire U.S. economy is being propped up by the promise of productivity gains that seem very far from materializing. By Rogé Karma The capability-reliability gap might explain why generative AI has so far failed to deliver tangible results for businesses that use it. When researchers at MIT recently tracked the results of 300 publicly disclosed AI initiatives, they found that 95 percent of projects failed to deliver any boost to profits. A March report from McKinsey & Company found that 71 percent of companies reported using generative AI, and more than 80 percent of them reported that the technology had no “tangible impact” on earnings. In light of these trends, Gartner, a tech-consulting firm, recently declared that AI has entered the “trough of disillusionment” phase of technological development. By one estimate, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Tesla will by the end of this year have collectively spent $560 billion on AI-related capital expenditures since the beginning of 2024 and have brought in just $35 billion in AI-related revenue. OpenAI and Anthropic are bringing in lots of revenue and are growing fast, but they are still nowhere near profitable. Their valuations—roughly $300 billion and $183 billion, respectively, and rising—are many multiples higher than their current revenues. (OpenAI projects about $13 billion in revenues this year; Anthropic, $2 billion to $4 billion.) Investors are betting heavily on the prospect that all of this spending will soon generate record-breaking profits. If that belief collapses, however, investors might start to sell en masse, causing the market to experience a large and painful correction. The dot-com crash was bad, but it did not trigger a crisis. An AI-bubble crash could be different. AI-related investments have already surpassed the level that telecom hit at the peak of the dot-com boom as a share of the economy. In the first half of this year, business spending on AI added more to GDP growth than all consumer spending combined. Many experts believe that a major reason the U.S. economy has been able to weather tariffs and mass deportations without a recession is because all of this AI spending is acting, in the words of one economist, as a “massive private sector stimulus program.” An AI crash could lead broadly to less spending, fewer jobs, and slower growth, potentially dragging the economy into a recession. The economist Noah Smith argues that it could even lead to a financial crisis if the unregulated “private credit” loans funding much of the industry’s expansion all go bust at once.

Still trying to understand the Hyundai ICE raid. Supposedly a months-long investigation that... picked up people here on visas, permanent residents, and U.S. citizens? I also haven't seen anyone charged under 8 USC §1324a for hiring undocumented employees. 🤔 www.nytimes.com/2025/09/07/u...

The raid swept up 475 people, most of them South Korean citizens, agents said. No Hyundai employees were arrested, the carmaker said. LG Energy Solution, the battery manufacturer, said 47 of its employees were detained. A majority of the arrested South Korean workers were not direct employees of Hyundai or LG but were subcontractors, according to industry officials familiar with the project. The LG employees arrested were helping oversee the factory’s construction, and had arrived in the United States with visas or under a visa waiver program, the officials said. Steven Schrank, a special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations for Georgia, said during a news conference that some U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents were also detained in the raid and would be released.

chat how do i get someone to buy my company for at least 10x my estimated revenue

from Status: Which is what makes one of his first big moves as Paramount’s new overlord so revealing and hypocritical. On Wednesday, Puck’s Dylan Byers reported that Ellison is on the verge of acquiring Bari Weiss’ The Free Press for “well above” $100 million—an astonishing and absurd sum for a Substack-housed opinion site that is only said to generate $10–15 million in annual subscription revenue, with its overhead unknown. Weiss, the stridently pro-Israel, proudly anti-“woke” culture warrior, has built her brand on polarizing political commentary—supposedly the type of material Ellison signaled to reporters that he wishes to run away from.

You know that boat the administration blew up? A former law enforcement official told the NYT the boat seemed to be carrying not drugs but *’migrants * www.nytimes.com/2025/09/03/u...

In the former official’s opinion, it was more likely that the vessel was carrying migrants on a human smuggling run. It would be impossible to know for sure, however, given that any evidence of drug smuggling was destroyed in the attack.

This is why I think a serious theory of deskilling is how we have to think about the proliferation of apparent bullshit jobs. It's capitalism, it's a war over wages. That's why "Why We Fear AI" calls this Techno-Taylorism

Also, even the idea of a single national identity for most European countries is relatively new, despite the claim of these "ancient nations." As of 1794, only 11% of people in France spoke French as a first language, and nearly half didn't speak French or spoke it poorly.

When you have troops under the command of the Texas governor illegally operating in Illinois against the wishes of the Illinois governor, that seems like it's already on the spectrum of internal conflict, regardless if anyone fights back. But whatever it is, it is not the Union as we know it.

This feels like a different topic It is true that China shut down a lot of coal in the 2010s, and that this preceded the explosion in renewables, but I'm not about the causal link. One of the main arguments for the coal closures was economic inefficiency

Help, please. I dimly recall a discussion of how China's BRI projects are good at building big central pieces of infrastructure but less good at connecting it with smaller bits to create an integrated system. Metaphorically, they focus on the main arteries but not how to organize the capillaries
