Ben Arbuckle wil call John Mateer a "dough head" on the sideline when the QB makes a mistake; the comments aren't always that PG. Even after an early INT against Michigan, the Oklahoma QB delivered the kind of performance that shows why his OC trusts him intrinsically. "I trust that kid to no end"

John Mateer is far from perfect, but he showed no fear against Michigan -- and the Heisman front-runner may only get better. "Had a bunch of turnovers, and still beat that ass." The #Sooners have found a new star to wish upon. On "No Fear" John Mateer: www.cbssports.com/college-foot...

Through two games, John Mateer has a dozen completions of 20-plus yards. In 13 games last season, Oklahoma's offense totaled 21 such completions.

Ben Arbuckle knew at the start of the 4th quarter that Oklahoma would close out Michigan. He just couldn’t have predicted how the Sooners did it. OU’s 8 1/2-minute game-clinching drive was the team’s most time-consuming scoring drive since 2021, as well as the second longest of Arbuckle’s career.

Oklahoma's "bunch of misfits" led the way in a 24-13 statement win against Michigan. Plus, additional notes on that 75-yard touchdown surrendered coming out of halftime, as well as injury updates for the Sooners.

John Mateer said he was watching College GameDay this morning but turned it off when they started talking about OU-Michigan. He asked who picked against Oklahoma, and he seemed amused to learn Nick Saban picked Michigan to win. (And understood, obviously, that Desmond Howard did too)
Tom Green (@tomasverde.bsky.social)
Asked Ben Arbuckle if he can recall, in his brief career as an OC, how many times his offense has put together an 8-minute drive. He said Wisconsin in 2023. That might be it. Until tonight.

Brent Venables on Oklahoma’s game-sealing drive: “That’s close to a 10-minute drive, and those are hard to get against good people. Those are hard to get in practice against the scouts.”

“Buncha misfits,” Brent Venables says of his team. — Leading tackler tonight is a walk-on former lacrosse player — Leading receiver a Purdue transfer — Punter came from University of Central Oklahoma

NORMAN -- These aren't the kind of games Oklahoma has won under Brent Venables -- the grind-it-out contests that hang in the balance into the fourth quarter. Until tonight. Oklahoma put together a statement performance early and late against Michigan with a 24-13 win that's Venables' biggest yet.
Tom Green (@tomasverde.bsky.social)
Deion Burks has his first 100-yard receiving game at Oklahoma -- against his home state team.
Tom Green (@tomasverde.bsky.social)
Oklahoma's special teams follies continue -- Tate Sandell misses a 42-yarder. It's still an eight-point game with 12:32 left in the game.

John Mateer is one of those QBs I’ll accept no notes on. Sidearm a fade. Dive headfirst into two defensive linemen. Look at him looking a gift horse in the mouth and walking under ladders. God loves him and that’s why he’s immune to fire and fall damage.
Tom Green (@tomasverde.bsky.social)
Deion Burks has 92 yards receiving in the first half. That's his most in a single game in an Oklahoma uniform and most since the 2023 season opener when he was at Purdue.
Tom Green (@tomasverde.bsky.social)
Touchdown, Oklahoma. John Mateer with the keeper from 2 yards out. Sooners take a 14-0 lead with 22 seconds left in the first half. Ten-play, 80-yard drive for Oklahoma in 2:55.

I imagine his career would be a lot more fruitful than it has been, and Oklahoma would've had its answer at Cheetah long before now (or rather, last year pre-Dolby injury, though they bring two distinct skillsets to that spot)
