An infrared satellite loop of Dorian from September 2, 2019 — six years ago. This is from the long forecasted period of flow weakening due to an upper level trough/weakness along the Mid-Atlantic coast. The storm was trying to stay as close to the edge of the Bahama Bank as possible.

September 1, 2019: An incredibly ominous satellite loop of Hurricane Dorian coming to a standstill over the Bahamas... at Category 5 intensity.

LOL I consider the autumnal equinox to be the Hallmark version of fall! It’s TikTok: no education necessary.
Tommy (@tommymacluckie.bsky.social) reply parent
As noted in the article as well. I’ve been hearing chatter that, Louisiana especially, is “being lulled into false sense of security”. I don’t believe that but some people love drama. Historically it gets busy in the second week of September.
Tommy (@tommymacluckie.bsky.social) reply parent
And now it’s two stormless years in a row!

I’m good. You didn’t laugh at that? This is not X. Sorry if my sense of humor was not… well, I dunno. It made me laugh. Besides, that guy commented with no context. So whatever. Keyboard warrior? I don’t know. Stupid, regardless. ‘Murica! See? It’s funny.

Are you the guy screaming in the video? If you are, great on you for being ignorant!

Sorry. I work outside. New Orleans. Landscaping. I live across the lake. I catch treefrogs, frogs, toads, turtles and snakes and bring them home while walking with my dogs. I follow hurricane specialists. Basically not “with it”, just cruising.
Tommy (@tommymacluckie.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh. LOL are there others!!??
Tommy (@tommymacluckie.bsky.social) reply parent
In this time of being able to simply look things up (preferably with “-noai”) there are the FOX NEWS/whatever else whores that BELIEVE what they’re told and anything else is a lie… while THEY, them they’s, ha ha, are being lied to. It’s brilliant, actually. My father is one of those dunts.
Tommy (@tommymacluckie.bsky.social) reply parent
Uh. In compliance with the screaming guy, I have seen that in my life: Steve Smith, Edmonton Oilers, 1986 NHL playoffs. Someone tell that guy to STFU.

Tommy (@tommymacluckie.bsky.social) reply parent
What is stunday? Haven’t seen that one.
Tommy (@tommymacluckie.bsky.social) reply parent
Curious, and I may’ve asked this in the past or you may’ve commented on it, if so I don’t recall, but they show the strong sustained winds magically stopping at the coast. That’s bizarre. For example: Ida had 110 mph sustained winds in Mandeville (125 mph gusts). Helene was a 2 into GA!
Tommy (@tommymacluckie.bsky.social) reply parent
Just checking!!!
Tommy (@tommymacluckie.bsky.social) reply parent
Generally 3s have a bigger wind field. I know not every hurricane (category) is the same size. TD Frances dumped a ton of rain in New Orleans (1998) and that storm center was very far away.
Tommy (@tommymacluckie.bsky.social) reply parent
Of course. It’s usually the 5 part that is small. Ida was a 3 when she cruised by 40 miles W of Mandeville but the sustained winds were reported to be 110 mph with two rounds of 125 mph gusts, a high end 2 in Mandeville. Laura, Zeta, Olga and… well, a few, were around 60 mph.
Tommy (@tommymacluckie.bsky.social) reply parent
???? Just turn on smoothing!!???
Tommy (@tommymacluckie.bsky.social) reply parent
Plants and dinosaurs loved it when it was much warmer.
Tommy (@tommymacluckie.bsky.social) reply parent
Obviously “fun fact” means FAKE NEWS.
Tommy (@tommymacluckie.bsky.social) reply parent
Back to being pointless. Oops. It’s generally always been pointless.
Tommy (@tommymacluckie.bsky.social) reply parent
Dying? Ho ho ho! Evolving! It’s been much hotter in the past.
Tommy (@tommymacluckie.bsky.social) reply parent
Category 5 storms are generally small while 3s are huge. Obviously the bigger the eye the weaker but bigger the storm. People freak out about a 5 because they don’t understand the size. Katrina and Rita looked big on satellite but their 5 winds were, what, 10% of the size? Ida was way worse.
Tommy (@tommymacluckie.bsky.social) reply parent
Temps in the sun are 120-130° in July and August. It’s really amazing.
Tommy (@tommymacluckie.bsky.social) reply parent
This summer dew points have been in the high 70s with ~ 60% humidity during the day (except for a hurricane etc humidity rarely gets to 50% during the day; 100% at night is the usual). It’s been as close to a normal summer in YEARS. It gets below 80° I get chilled. I work outside.
Tommy (@tommymacluckie.bsky.social) reply parent
Meteorological fall is September 1. Hallmark’s fall is the equinox. 90° is “brutal”? That’s HILARIOUS! 90° is a cool down in Louisiana.
Tommy (@tommymacluckie.bsky.social) reply parent
Also the 28’ is bunk. It was considerably higher. Katrina made Mississippi Bangladesh.
Tommy (@tommymacluckie.bsky.social) reply parent
Complacency is real. For some it’s earned, others are defiant or simply don’t believe (understand). I don’t leave for hurricanes. I was in Illinois when Katrina hit (visiting). My home wasn’t destroyed but it was unlivable until spring of 2006. I was home for Ida. That was really something!!!
Tommy (@tommymacluckie.bsky.social) reply parent
I can easily spot the difference.

“Is a given event the kind of thing that happens naturally, or not?” is probably obtuse. What’s the saying? For every action there is a consequence? Or “every action has an equal and opposite reaction” said from Newton and similar from others. We the people are part of Earth.

It appears that wx AI is better than regular ol’ AI (the kind that always lies, like Google). As long as it’s compared to/checked out against models… models are not accurate exactly. At some point it seems rather obvious that wx AI won’t be - it’s AI. AI can’t grow plants.

I anxiously await them having a disaster and crying about not being informed and not getting FEMA help. It used to be ‘you get what you pay for’. Many people have poo-pooed the saying of ‘They got what they voted for’ as if they DIDN’T KNOW. Not buying it. Nebraska is a great example.

I hear the quips about “no global warming happening here (MI)” or “If climate change keeps changing we’ll be growing coconut trees soon! (LA)” In LA we tend to get A LOT of rain during summer, 2024 and more so 2025 it’s been raining more heavily than usual when it rains intensely. That’s different.

The nursery industry uses the term “shrub” and in some states nurseries can be fined for using bush instead of shrub! I haven’t said “bush” to describe a shrub in eons. I’ve done landscaping in SE LA since 1994 as well as worked at some nurseries and it’s generally an extinct term for a plant.
Tommy (@tommymacluckie.bsky.social) reply parent

The difference between tidal surge, often said to mean storm surge, and storm surge. An incredible misuse of terminology. Bay Of Fundy: tidal surge. Not tropical cyclones. Then the absurdity of saying “monsoon season”.

There HAS to be a way to record the in-the-sun temp. It’s 2025, not 1995 or 1975.
Tommy (@tommymacluckie.bsky.social) reply parent
Temp is measured in the shade. In the sun temp can be as high as the 130s (quite a bit higher on a roof). Had a chat with Carl Arredondo (retired WWL-TV met) a few years back about that. It’s extremely inaccurate yet nothing has evolved for it to be known. I’m out in it, working, almost everyday.
