Thing is though…while Trump has unique abilities as a demagogue cult leader, he is just the end result of fascism that’s been growing since Reagan and even earlier. There’s an old saying “The emperors didn’t make Rome; Rome made the emperors.” Same is true of us. America is very sick.

The opinion of the courts and the soldiers on the ground matter a lot more than our opinions. I’m just telling you what the law says and what the historical precedents are.
You and I know this is insane, but he could easily claim he’s having trouble enforcing immigration laws and the current Supreme Court would back him 100%.
Again, I think this is all resting on incredibly shaky legal ground. Regrettably, the President seems to have the authority to federalize the National Guard to execute the laws if he is otherwise unable to execute those laws.
The law specifies that there could merely be a “danger” of rebellion. It also says that the National Guard could be federalized if the president is “unable with regular forces to execute the laws.”
(And this is what I mean when I say we have to be smart.)
On that point, you might be right. The mayor did reiterate Chicago law on those points in his recent executive order. What you’re proposing here is very different from the original put “the National Guard on standby to defend this shit.”
If a state’s National Guard is being used to resist the execution of federal law, the president could certainly claim insurrection. Just to be against be clear, I’d hope that Trump would lose that argument, but I wouldn’t want to bet on it.

That’s a heck of a gamble though. Activating them might be exactly what he’s looking for, and many people would get killed in the process. To be clear, fierce resistance is needed, but we need to be smart and strategic.
