I genuinely did not see the twist coming until the end even though... SPOILERS FOR FINAL DESTINATION 5 . . . .I clocked Everclear on the radio and raised an eyebrow when someone called another character Lisa Loeb. I was not putting it together. "Wow those references are dated," says me, an idiot.
Well, it was better than 4, by a mile. And it introduced a new concept that could be used to defeat, temporarily, death, as well as being darker, overall, than any movie since the first. That means it was better than, like, all the other sequels.

The acting is doooooooog shit bro. The CGI is SyFy Original, at best, and the 3D effects are sooooooo bad. But, also, in the story, the flashes the protagonist (whose name I do not know nor care to) are just uninteresting. Disjointed.

Final Destination 4: thirty seconds in, I recognize the dogshit film quality of many a direct-to-DVD sequel and the 3D effects are going to be, in a word, regrettable.
I was correct. Final Destination 3 SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS . . . . . . Man, I know the villain is literally death, but the series has introduced the concept that people can escape the retributive death with the sequel. Now we're back to "nahhh," it's kinda a bummer.

I think she hit the notes of a Zoey Deschanel and a Sarah Michelle Gellar somehow. One assumes she is wasted in what is to come.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead really had something going in the 2000s. Like, she had both vulnerability and determination locked in, so you could believe her terror and resilience.
Naturally, the rollercoaster is the site of the crazy accident that will lead to premonition and subsequent cheating of death (temporarily for some). Looks like it must have been Hella fun to shoot on, since they actually have a rollercoaster to ride.
Final Destination 3: a character says that it is incredibly unlikely, statistically, that the rollercoaster they're on will have any issues at all leading to passenger harm. This might be the first lampshade moment in the franchise.
Otherwise, this is still the inferior movie versus the original. I look forward to disliking the rest of these movies.
I did like the one guy trying to kill himself and being unable to. Not only is Death a relentless bastard, he is extremely petty. You WILL die on his terms.

The connection to the first movie almost makes up for not giving a shit about any of these people. It shows how hard Death has it, trying to control the ripple effects that Caspar caused.
I dunno, maybe it just wasn't MY generational trauma Final Destination movie, but the car wreck is rather elaborate. I don't think Death should have to Rube Goldberg the initial accident. I think it's funnier if he has to work overtime tracking down the individuals who got away.

I like how people are creeped out by Devon Sawa's character. No one is dismissing his vision the way they do in horror movies where that one person knows what's up. They're all freaked because a) they think he blew up a plane and b) are happy to be alive but only b/c the grace of an airplane bomber.

Honestly, Ali Larter's character is who I would aspire to be, the seeming normal person who isn't afraid to follow the crazy guy off the plane. But even in 2000, most of us were plenty happy to just have that disruptive person off our flight and kept our asses in the seats. I would have DIED.
