How do we use the fear of what risks we take when building community to move intentionally into community building? How do we hold space for that fear & support people anyways? How do we move from a place of powerlessness to action in solidarity with people who are oppressed & marginalized?
These are things neighbors would do for each other in the working class neighborhood I grew up in. I never felt completely safe there, but my neighborhood had people where capitalism fell short. It’s less like this now cause neighborhood watch and neighborhood association bullshit scares people.
But what about the projects that make it so people who are housed in hotels get to find a permanent situation again when they can’t manage their way out alone? Who’s helping caregivers have a shower? Who’s doing more than giving away old clothes, canned goods and $5 bills? I know we are out there.
Don’t get me wrong I’ve been involved in creating and developing these projects and I know they don’t last forever. They are not non profits. They aren’t concerned with existing, but caring for people. Only that’s not happening as much either. I see complaints about ppl only asking for funds…
I’m noticing red states with fewer and fewer “care networks” and other projects that help meet people’s survival needs just as anti-trans legislation was going into effect everywhere. It’s really unfortunate that we can’t depend on a lot people to do more than give a few bucks once in a while.
