Ireland is a post-colonial nation. In a way, it is one of the archetypes of a post-colonial nation (albeit with the unusual feature of being now in the EU). But I can’t distill our underlying framework as pithily, because I live inside the society.

Societies power structures sometimes seem clearer close up. But sometimes they have an underlying structure that is most apparent from the outside. For example, the U.K. is built around maintaining and enforcing class differences. Similarly, US institutions has an underlying racism that repeats.

"Dublin Bay Chimneys", a new #painting that sold earlier this month. For many, seeing the chimneys when arriving into Dublin port or Dublin airport, means simply one thing. Home, that word home, with all its flaws and its joys, it means you’re home. So I paint them. #SpeirGorm #Stunday #ArtYear

Landscape format in loose painterly acrylics on canvas. With an horizon over halfway up the painting the majority of the area of the painting is the river, rendered in lots of short wide strokes of different shades of turquoise with two darker narrow horizontal bars and lots of little flecks of peach and pink. The Poolbeg peninsula of dark blue with a jagged horizontal top suggestive of a tree line, comes out from the right edge nearly halfway down and on it are the two chimneys, with their plain concrete bottom halves rendered in peach, and their top halves in red and white bands. Further back is another peninsula running fully across the gap between the Poolbeg Peninsula and the left edge of the painting. It is in dark turquoise but paler than the nearer dark blue Poolbeg one. On it are four narrow tall chimneys in peach, maybe half the height of the red and white chimneys. There are also the tops of some oil container shapes in peach. Behind them in the distance is the profile of a landmass in pale blue showing the peaks of the Sugar Loaf and the Little Sugar Loaf and the beginning of a large mountain at the right edge. The sky is a very pale impressionistic teal except for a band along the top which is a dark smokey magenta cloud on blue with some pale pink highlights along the bottom of that dark cloud. Signed bottom right, Liam Daly

This is the introduction to “Forbidden Laughter: Soviet Underground Jokes”, published in 1978. We’re just people here. But people making each other laugh is the thing that can keep them alive. Even in the face of “speeches and signs in which (as you well know!) there isn't a grain of truth”

Dear Reader, Imagine that you are an ordinary Soviet citizen. From early in the morning you are pestered by hundreds of petty troubles. Your day is full of problems, such as the fuss at a job which you can't respect because it doesn't even allow you to make ends meet. Meanwhile, you are attacked from all sides by slogans, speeches and signs in which (as you well know!) there isn't a grain of truth. You are forced to listen to political information, even though it is clear to you thot it is rather political mis information. To participate in a subbotnik*, having been supplied with one shovel for nearly a hundred people ... To carry the so-called public burden, which encroaches upon your already-too-short leisure time... It seems as if there is no limit to the absurdity, stupidity, inefficiency, hypocrisy and violation of your will. Toward the end of the day you are dead tired, not so much physically as morally.

Old Soviet joke for today: A man walks into a newsstand every day, looks around, and leaves. After a long time of this, the owner says “Can I help you find something?” “I’m looking for the obituaries.” “The obituaries are in the back of the newspaper, comrade.” “Not the one I’m looking for.”

Time Machine stories have been a lifelong personal delight. But before travelling through time in an automated fashion, we have to do it the old fashioned, manual way So, year by year, we laboriously travel through future history, which for some reason seems to have way more Morlocks than is ideal

Interesting thread on historical worries about the UK doctrine of parliamentary sovereignty. I’d add 2 observations: 1) 19th C / Early 20th C concerns were frequently worries about extension of the franchise. 2) EU membership gave the U.K. a written Constitution it liked to pretend hadn’t happened.
