Notably, Krazy Kat's cast spoke in what was undeniable AAVE at that time, Krazy themselves were one of the first gender queer characters, and the entire thing comic was absolute stream of conciousness nonsense. The comic was WELL ahead of its time & thats why William Randolph Hearst championed it.
George Herriman is arguably one of the first major black artists in comics. And the only reason for that is because NO ONE KNEW HE WAS BLACK. He was light skinned enough to be white passing & hid that fact into old age so that he WOULD be able to continue drawing largely due to rampant racism.
As someone who tends to feel much more responsibility for others than is healthy, & as someone who dissociates heavily as a matter of course when triggered rather than processing things, I really need to internalize this. Compassion fatigue and burnout are seriously dangerous.

I was in my mid teens when I started reading it. I'm now 38. I believe I'm a better person than I would have been without the influence of your art. That's assuming I would have survived. I've been clinically depressed since I was seven. Great fiction helps me cope. I'm deeply grateful.

I already had severe intractable chronic pain issues when I developed shingles in my late 20s. One of the worst weeks of my life, despite valcyclovir and fairly high dose oxycodone.

We asked our 10 + 7yo to join us in making a family decision to boycott. It was the 1st time the kids were actively engaged in the boycott and had to give something up that’s very important to them. And it was the *best* decision because based off of n=1 they’re all OH WOW, BOYCOTTS WORK.

Pardon, running from And I suppose it spoils that certain characters survive to the end, but that really isn't surprising. A good bit of the plot involves the development and adoption of immortality technology.
Incidentally, Howard has long covid and is a very cool guy. We're privileged to have him available on social media.
If you take the archives to the very end and read the last three comics, you'll see a Watterson homage, a redo of the very first strip showing how far his art came, & one of the main characters riding a fluffy feathered T-Rex. Best not to go back beyond that, but those three don't spoil anything.
It's not quite as good at the beginning as it is later on, but I recommend starting at the very beginning. The art improves dramatically over time, and he gets a lot better at really meaningful stories that don't rely on comedy for their impact, but the whole thing is worthwhile.
I'm on a partial reread now, going from a favorite part of the story I wanted to reread and letting myself get caught up in momentum. Webcomics allow for very long form stories with complex, detailed metaplots and deep character development. @/howardtayler.bsky.social is a master of the art.
I grew up with Schlock Mercenary. Started reading it early in the strip, before it was more than maybe two years old? It went for 20, every day, full color, only late twice. Triple size on Sundays. I've read through the entire archives many times.
I've read enough of his author's notes to know that he's someone I would respect even if he wasn't one of my favorite artists. Also, speaking as someone who was raised by an art teacher, his thoughts on "low" vs "high" art are spot on. Comics deserve respect as serious artistic works.
Yeah, Hobbes plushies alone could have made him quite rich. I seem to recall that he actually sold the licensing rights very early on, but realized his mistake and fortunately was allowed to buy them back before anything was produced.
